The final quarter of play proved to be too much for the NBA D-League Select Team as the Minnesota Timberwolves earned an 86-78 victory over the NBA D-League Select Team on Saturday in Cox Pavilion at the 2012 NBA Summer League.
Wes Johnson scored a game-high 28 points for the Timberwolves while Derrick Williams added 15. The NBA D-League Select Team was led by Mardy Collins with 20 points off the bench while Kenny Hayes added 13.
Andre Emmett led the NBA D-League Select Team to a 20-12 first quarter lead over the Timberwolves scoring seven of the team's points. With the game tied at two in the opening quarter of play, the NBA D-League Select Team went on an 11-2 run to open up the game and led by as many as 10 in the period.
The NBA D-League Select Team maintained their lead for the second quarter taking a 45-35 advantage at the half. The Timberwolves made a run at NBA D-League Select Team in the second quarter cutting the lead to three before the NBA D-League Select team answered with a 5-0 run of their own to cushion their lead. The first half offensive effort for the NBA D-League Select Team was led by Collins with 10 points off the bench while Hayes and Emmett each had nine first half points. Johnson led the Timberwolves with 14 points.
Minnesota opened the third quarter on a 13-4 run coming within one of the NBA D-League Select Team with 5:31 left in the quarter and a timeout was quickly called by the NBA D-League Select Team head coach Eric Musselman. Following the timeout the NBA D-League Select Team answered with a 7-2 run of their own. The NBA D-League Select Team maintained their lead for the remainder of the quarter, and led 60-56 heading into the final quarter.
The Timberwolves tied the game at 68 with 6:22 left in the game and took the lead for good with 5:12 left in the quarter. The Timberwolves fourth quarter effort was led by Johnson with nine points and Taylor with seven points. The D-League fourth quarter offense was led by Marcus Dove with 10 points and Kenny Hayes with six points.
Playing in their final game of their five-game summer schedule, the NBA D-League Select Team finished with a record of 2-3 while the Minnesota Timberwolves (x-x) will close out the 2012 NBA Summer League on Sunday in the final game of the tournament as they host the Memphis Grizzlies at 5:00 p.m. in Cox Pavilion.
