Summer League: Heat 83, Spurs 78

Posted Friday July 20, 2012 10:03PM

The Heat regained the lead, which they hadn't owned since early in the game, late in the fourth quarter en route to a 83-78 victory over the San Antonio Spurs at the 2012 NBA Summer League on the campus of the University of Las Vegas - Nevada. Terrel Harris scored a game-high 25 points to go with five rebounds for Miami in the win, while Alexis Ajinca's 12 points topped all scorers for San Antonio.

Having trailed most of the game, Miami turned on the gas in the fourth quarter, mounting a comeback that eventually would tie the game at 70 with under five minutes to play on an Adrian Thomas long-range jumper. San Antonio held on, briefly, regaining the lead two minutes later on a James Anderson bucket. From there, the teams traded buckets and the lead until Miami pulled ahead with 1:51 to play on an Anderson tip. Less than a minute later, Harris drained a six-foot bank shot to take a 81-78 advantage over the Spurs, never to look back.

Miami used a 12-2 run in the first quarter to pull ahead by as many as 11 points before settling for a seven-point lead, 29-22, at the end of one, but it was a short-lived lead. The momentum shifted in the second quarter, with San Antonio taking the reigns and the lead of the game, 30-29, with 8:29 remaining on an Ajinca layup. The Spurs extended their lead to as many as eight in the period, while holding Miami to only nine points. San Antonio lead the way going into the halftime break, 46-38.

San Antonio extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the third quarter before securing a 64-55 edge heading into the game's final period, where the momentum would shift again.

Both teams return to NBA Summer League action tomorrow when Miami faces the Portland Trail Blazers at 1pm PT and the Spurs take on the Dallas Mavericks at 3pm PT.
