Summer League: Grizzlies 97, Bobcats 79

Posted Friday July 20, 2012 8:42PM

The Memphis Grizzlies improved to 2-1 at the 2012 NBA Summer League with a 97-79 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats (4-1) on Friday afternoon from UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. The Grizzlies were led by a 32-point outing from Josh Selby.

Selby was perfect from the free throw line with a 7-for-7 performance, while connecting on 7-of-11 shots from behind the arc. In all, he shot 64 percent from the field with a 9-for-14 effort.

After playing to four ties and three lead changes in the first quarter, Memphis took control of the game behind a 28-10 showing in the game's second 10 minutes. The Grizzlies, who had a four-point lead wiped out at the end of the first, rattled off 12 straight points in the opening 2:49 to put some breathing room between themselves and the Bobcats. Eight of those 12 points came from Selby, including six off of two 3-pointers that began the scoring stretch.

The Grizzlies managed to extend their lead to 18 on two separate occasions with the last coming at the end of the half, 52-34.

The third quarter began quite similar to the second with Memphis scoring at will. A Selby free throw capped a 12-4 run to open up the third quarter that put a 24-point differential between the two squads.

Immediately following the end of Memphis' run Charlotte went on a scoring stretch of its own to cut the deficit to 13 in the waning moments of the third. The Bobcats scored 15 of the next 19 in a span of 5:16.

The third ended with Charlotte leading by 16, which was the closest the two teams would get the remainder of the contest.

Memphis had three others besides Selby score in double-figures in the game. Deon Thompson led the trio with 15 points, while Xavi Rey and Jerome Randle had 14 and 12, respectively.

Charlotte was led by a 16-point outing from Kemba Walker. Cory Higgins followed closely behind with 15, as Carlon Brown and Bismack Biyombo had 10 apiece.

The Grizzlies return to action on Saturday against the Phoenix Suns at 7:00 pm.
