The Dallas Mavericks (3-1) knocked off the New Orleans Hornets (1-3) 78-65 Friday night at the 2012 NBA Summer League held at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. Dallas used a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take hold of the contest en route to its 13-point victory, which was sparked by Jae Crowder's 18-point effort.
Crowder, who was originally drafted by Cleveland with the 34th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and then subsequently traded to Dallas, keyed the scoring outburst in a span of 7:39 in the second quarter with eight points. He got the offensive going with back-to-back 3-pointers before stretching the lead to nine later with an alley-oop dunk.
The Mavericks, who were being cheered on courtside by country music singer Josh Abbott, wound up taking an 11-point lead into the half and cruised easily through the last 20 minutes of the contest. Dallas eventually put a 19-point difference between itself and New Orleans late in the fourth.
The two squads traded the lead on four occasions in the first quarter with New Orleans staking itself to its biggest lead, three points, at 15-12. Dallas countered with a 6-2 run to end the final 10 minutes of action with a one-point lead, 18-17.
The Hornets began the second quarter with two quick baskets to take a 21-18 lead, which would be their last of the evening.
New Orleans could only manage to pull within eight points the majority of the third before it cut the deficit to six with 1:27 remaining in the stanza. Dallas kicked the lead back to nine with help from a three-point play from Bernard James with 22 seconds left in the clock.
Besides Crowder's offensive effort, the Mavericks got double-digit outings from Dominique Jones (16 points), Justin Dentmon (12) and Drew Gordon (10), who added a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Xavier Henry and Brian Roberts led New Orleans with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Both teams return to action on Saturday for their fifth and final games. Dallas will take the court first with a 3:00 pm tilt against the San Antonio Spurs. New Orleans will follow 30 minutes later at 3:30 pm against the Golden State Warriors.
