Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Atlanta Hawks 84-78 in a tight 2012 NBA Summer League play at the Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. Lillard led the way with 31 points on 11-of-22 from the floor. His effort was complimented by a 14-point outing from Will Barton. Meyers Leonard finished with a game-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points in the win.
Atlanta out hustled the Trail Blazers in the first quarter, shooting 44 percent from the field as seven Hawks scored. Portland's Damian Lillard kept the game close, though, putting his team on his back and scoring 11 in the period. At the end of one, Atlanta owned a two-point lead, 21-19.
It was all Portland in the second quarter, taking the lead, 23-21, on an Ekene Ibekwe dunk with 8:36 left in the half and never looking back - the Blazers led the rest of the way. The team stretched its lead to as many as eight points in the second quarter before settling for a six-point advantage at the halftime break, 39-33.
The Trail Blazers hung on to the lead in the third quarter despite Atlanta cutting the lead to one, 51-50, on a John Jenkins jumper with 4:28 on the clock. The teams went into the game's final quarter separated by only three points, with the Blazers hanging on to a 60-57 lead.
Portland extended their lead to as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter before the game ended with a six-point victory.
Mike Scott led all Atlanta scorers with 14 points, while Jordan Taylor scored 13 points in the loss.
Atlanta finishes their stint at the 2012 NBA Summer League with a 2-3 overall record, while Portland returns to action on Friday, July 20 at 3pm PT when the team faces the Denver Nuggets.
