The Lakers have had a rough go at it in Las Vegas, losing their first four games, including a 50-point loss to the Miami Heat, the worst loss to record in an NBA Summer League Game. Putting the disappointment behind them, the Lakers came out strong against the Clippers in what was their final game of the summer.
Julian Khazzouh, a 6-10 prospect from Australia, helped the Lakers get off to a fast start, scoring ten first quarter points, including two 3-pointers to give the Lakers a 28-12 advantage. Khazzouh had a brief stint with the Golden State Warriors this past December but was waived before the start of the 2011-12 season. He finished with 16 points and was 4-for-5 from three point land.
The Lakers were able to sustain their lead in the second quarter taking a 44-33 lead into the locker room, holding off a surge provided by Clippers forward Adam Morrison. Morrison who was the third overall selection in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats and last played in the NBA for the Lakers in 2009-10 has experienced success here in the NBA Summer League. In two games he has scored 34 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He finished the contest with 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the floor and also connected on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc.
Terrico White provided a spark off the bench for the Clippers, scoring nine fourth quarter points to pull the Clippers within four points at 64-60. White appeared in one game last season with the New Orleans Hornets but spent most of the year with the Idaho Stampede in the NBA Development League.
Morrison cut into the lead even further hitting a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining to cut the Lakers lead to 71-69, but that was as close as they would get. Darius Morris continued to show his ability to penetrate opposing defenses. He was fouled on two consecutive possessions in the final minute and hit all four of his free throw attempts to make the score 75-69 and secure the victory for the Lakers.
The Clippers will take Friday off and return to action on Saturday versus the Chicago Bulls, 5:30 P.M. at Thomas and Mack. The Lakers have wrapped up their NBA Summer League slate and have finished with a 1-4 record here in Las Vegas.
