Summer League: Raptors 96, Kings 89

Posted Wednesday July 18, 2012 8:52PM

The Toronto Raptors (1-3) notched their first win at the 2012 NBA Summer League with a 96-89 victory over the Sacramento Kings (1-3) on Wednesday from UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. Toronto led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter before it weathered a late 12-0 run by Sacramento in the final minutes of the contest.

The Raptors were led by a game-high 21 points from Terrence Ross, who shot 7-for-17 from the field with two made 3-pointers and five free throws. Bobby Brown chipped in 17 points, while Ed Davis and Devoe Joseph had 10 points apiece.

After carrying an eight-point lead into intermission, Toronto's offense maintained a double-figure lead for all but 2:09 of the second half. The Raptors were able to pull within single digits with 1:25 left in the affair.

Josh Akognon was the main catalyst for the Kings' rally late in the game with seven of the team's 12 points in the late run. Akognon finished the game with 18 points, 12 of which came from the charity stripe.

Sacramento opened the game with a short-lived four-point lead, 6-2, just 2:35 into the contest. Toronto then came alive and scored 16 of the next 24 points for a four-point lead, 18-14, after 10 minutes of action.

Toronto kept the pedal down at the start of the second stanza, and extended its lead to 11 with 8:32 on the clock. In all, the Canadian squad's run was 23-8 in a span of 9:06.

Once the Kings put a stop to the run at the 25-16 juncture, their offense slowly chipped away at the deficit and pulled within three with 47 seconds left in the half. However, the Raptors pushed the lead back to five with five straight points before intermission.

Jimmer Fredette led the Kings in scoring with 19 points. Tony Mitchell and Yancy Gates joined Fredette and Akognon in double digits with 12 and 11 scores, respectively.

Both teams return to action on Thursday for their fifth and final games of the summer. Toronto hits the court first with a 1:00 p.m. PT tilt against the New York Knicks, while Sacramento faces Boston Celtics at 3:30 p.m. PT.
