Summer League: Hornets 78, Suns 61

Posted Wednesday July 18, 2012 10:57PM

The New Orleans Hornets (1-2) knocked off the Phoenix Suns (1-2) 78-61 at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV for their first victory at this year's NBA Summer League.

Suns forward Markieff Morris, coming off a 24-point, 17-rebound performance Tuesday against the Cavs and, was held in check with 13 points and six boards. New Orleans won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Phoenix 40-29. The Suns were only able to score four second-chance points.

Morris experienced most of his success in the first quarter when he accounted for nine of the Suns' 15 points. The Hornets responded with a 15-0 run spanning 4:59 and took an early 21-15 first quarter lead.

Brian Roberts, a 6-foot-1 guard who played the last three seasons with Brose Baskets Bamberg in Germany led the Hornets in the first half with 13 points and helped them open up a 42-36 halftime lead. He was the leading scorer in the game finishing with 16 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the floor.

Midway through the third quarter, New Orleans created some separation behind Lance Thomas, a 6-foot-8 forward out of Duke University who signed with the Hornets this past February. Thomas compiled eight points in the third quarter, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds in the win. The Suns were held to just eight points in the third quarter and saw their deficit balloon to 25 in the fourth quarter.

One bright spot for the Suns was Marcus Landry, who saw his outside shooting success continue. Landry came off the bench to score 11 points and connected on 3-for-8 shot attempts from beyond the arc.

Phoenix will have an off day before returning to the floor to take on the NBA D-League Select Team on Friday at Cox Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. New Orleans also returns to action on Friday when it battles the Dallas Mavericks, 7:30 p.m. PT at Thomas and Mack.
