The Houston Rockets extended their win streak to three as they shut down the Portland Trail Blazers 99-88 on day five of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. NBA officials called the game with 42.8 seconds to play when Nolan Smith of the Blazers went down injured driving to the basket, he was carried out on a stretcher.
Terrence Jones scored a team high 24 points for Houston while Jeremy Lamb added 23 points and Donatas Motiejunas added 20. The Blazers were led by Damian Lillard and Smith who each tallied 27 points.
Smith and Lillard combined for 20 points in the opening quarter leading the Blazers to a 28-24 first quarter lead. The quarter was close the entire way neither team leading by more than four points. Portland finished the quarter on a 5-0 run and took the lead with 57 seconds to go in the quarter.
The Rockets opened the second quarter on a 12-6 run to tie the game at 36 and continued to dominate the quarter and took the 51-46 lead at the half. Lamb was the driving force behind Houston's offense scoring 13 of the team's 27 points. Smith led the Blazers with nine second quarter points.
Houston built their lead to as many as 16 in the third period and finished the quarter up eight, 78-80. Jones led the Rockets with nine points in the quarter and Luke Babbitt led the Blazers with 11.
Jones led the Rockets in the fourth quarter with six points while Lillard led the Blazers with nine points.
The Houston Rockets (3-1) will play their last game in their five-game summer schedule on Wednesday, July 18 as they take on the Chicago Bulls. The Portland Trail Blazers (1-1) will rest on Wednesday and will return to the hardwood on Thursday, July 19 as they host the Atlanta Hawks.
