Summer League: Nuggets 85, Knicks 81

With 13.4 seconds left in the game, Kenneth Faired sealed the Denver Nuggets' 85-81 victory over the New York Knicks with a put-back layup in the opening game of play in the fifth day of play in the 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Jordan Hamilton led all scorers with 21 points for the Nuggets while Faired added 16. Chris Copeland led the Knicks with 15 points and Wesley Witherspoon chipped in 12 off the bench. The game was close throughout and featured 10 lead changes and nine ties.

In the opening quarter of play, the Knicks jumped out to a 14-4 lead and led by as many as 15 in the period to finish up 25-17. New York was led by Mustapha Farrakhan who scored eight points in the period while Copeland and James White both added six. Denver was led by Faried and Jordan Hamilton who each tallied six points.

The Nuggets opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to knot the game at 27 at the 6:30 mark. The teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half with the score tied up at 44 at the half. Witherspoon led the Knicks with eight points in the quarter while Hamilton led the Nuggets with nine points.

Denver jumped out to a 9-2 run in the third quarter only to be matched by a New York run of 7-2 run at the end of the period. The Nuggets took a one point lead, 62-61, heading into the final period of play. Faired led the Nuggets with six points in the quarter while Copeland chipped in seven points for the Knicks.

The Nuggets once again dominated the first few minutes of the fourth quarter jumping out to an early eight point lead however it was short lived as the Knicks stormed back and tied the game up at 73 with 4:33 left to play. The Knicks were led by Ahmad Nivins with nine points in the final quarter while Josh Carter led the Nuggets with five points.

Both teams will take Wednesday off and return to action on Thursday, the New York Knicks (0-3) will take on the Raptors at 1 p.m. in Cox Pavilion while the Nuggets (1-2) will host the Charlotte Bobcats at 7:30 p.m. in Thomas & Mack in the final game that evening.
