The Boston Celtics (2-0) held off a late rally by the Chicago Bulls (0-1) for a 79-74 win at the 2012 NBA Summer League played at UNLV's Cox Pavilion. The Celtics, who had built a 23-point cushion, watched the Bulls pull within four with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
Boston actually owned three different 23-point leads in the contest with the last coming at the 61-38 juncture only 3:11 into the second half. Chicago then went on a tear of its own and doubled up its opponent 36-18 the remainder of the game.
Chicago's late offensive production was spurned by a 12-point outburst from Jimmy Butler, whose 25 points tied for the game high. Butler was 7-for-16 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
The first quarter was a tightly contested affair with the biggest margin of difference being five points after seven lead changes and four ties, which Boston owned after 10 minutes of play.
After seeing their lead cut to two with 6:21 left in the half, the Celtics rattled off 14 straight points by six different players in just under four minutes to extend its lead to 16. The run ballooned to 23-2 after it carried over 1:02 into the start of the second half.
The Bulls only points in that 6:53 span came from Jamie Skeen with 1:52 on the clock in the opening half.
Boston's E'Twaun Moore had a 25-point effort on 10-for-19 shooting. Moore also picked up seven boards in the win. Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith also reached double-figures with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
Chicago's Malcolm Thomas notched a double-double in victory with his combination of 13 rebounds and 10 points.
The Bulls return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PT with a game against the Houston Rockets. Boston will have a day off before facing the Sacramento Kings on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
