Summer League: Suns 99, Knicks 74

Posted Sunday July 15, 2012 6:03PM

The Phoenix Suns defeated the New York Knicks 99-74 in the first game on the third day of action at the 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas on the campus of the University of Las Vegas - Nevada. The balanced Phoenix attack was led by Markieff Morris' 21 points and DeShawn Sims' 16. Marcus Landry and Erving Walker each chipped in with 12 points in the win.

The Suns jumped out to an early 22-8 lead before the Knicks dusted off the Sunday morning cobwebs, went on an 8-1 run to get within five points, 23-18, with under a minute left to play in the game's opening quarter. At the end of one, the Suns led 27-18 on the back of Morris' 10-point quarter.

In a streaky second period defined by runs, Phoenix struck early and often, going on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 15, 44-29, with 3:18 to play in the first half. The Knicks countered with a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 10, 44-34, before Phoenix charged back, scoring the last five points of the period. The Suns owned a 49-36 lead heading into the halftime break with Morris' 17-point half leading the way.

Phoenix continued to dominate in the third quarter, owning a game-high 20-point advantage heading into the game's final frame. Landry led the way for the Suns, scoring eight points in the third on a perfect three-of-three from the floor.

The Suns outscored New York 23-18 in the game's final stanza, stretching their lead to as many as 25 points.

The Knicks were led by Chris Copeland's 17-point game, while Artsiom Parakhouski, Mustapha Farrakhan and Wesley Witherspoon each netted 10 points in the loss.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, July 17 when the Knicks take on Denver Nuggets at 1pm PT and the Suns face the Cleveland Cavaliers at 5:30pm PT. Phoenix is now 1-0 at this year's summer classic while the Knicks fall to 0-2 following a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies yesterday.
