The Dallas Mavericks held on to defeat the Denver Nuggets 88-77 in the second game on the third day of action at the 2012 NBA Summer League on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Mavericks were led by Dominique Jones who scored a 2012 NBA Summer League high 32 points on 12-of-25 from the floor and seven-of-nine from the line. His effort was complimented by 11 points from David Jelnik.
The teams traded buckets for the game's first seven minutes, with Dallas leading 14-13 with 2:41 remaining in the first period. From there, the Mavericks pulled ahead, outscoring Denver 10-6 to finish the period up 24-19.
The Mavericks pulled away in the second quarter, going on an 11-5 run to open the period and securing a 35-24 lead with just under seven minutes left in the first half. During the quarter, they stretched their lead to as many as 17 points as Dominique Jones scored 12 points. Denver's Evan Fournier, a first-round selection in last month's NBA Draft, scored nine points in the second frame but it wasn't enough - at the end of two, Dallas had an 11-point lead, 50-39.
Denver surged back in the third quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 22-17 in the period and coming within seven points, 68-61, following a 10-3 run to end the period.
Dallas held Denver to only 16 points in the fourth quarter. The Nuggets finished the game shooting only 30 percent from the floor to Dallas' 47 percent.
Denver was led by Jordan Hamilton's 18 points and 15-point games from Fournier and Josh Carter.
The Mavericks return to action tomorrow when they face the Sacramento Kings at 3:30 pm PT while the Nuggets face the New York Knicks on Tuesday, July 17 at 1pm PT.
