The Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) trailed only once in their 93-77 win over the New York Knicks (0-1) in Saturday's opening game of the 2012 NBA Summer League held at UNLV's Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The Grizzlies never relinquished the lead after overcoming an early 2-0 deficit, and they were paced offensively by a 20-point showing by Josh Selby.
Selby was one of four Memphis players to reach double digits in points with 15 coming from a 5-for-7 performance behind the arc. Tony Wroten was influential offensively behind a 19-point effort to go along with game highs in rebounds (eight) and assists (six). Matt Janning and Mitchell Watt rounded out the quarter of Grizzlies in double figures, as the duo had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Memphis took ownership of the game behind quality shooting from the free-throw line and three-pointers. The offense began the game 9-for-9 at the stripe and missed only twice in the first half, as they went into intermission making 12 of 14 attempts. Their long-range shooting was just as good with six makes in eight tries.
The Grizzlies built a 21-point lead through 10 minutes of play only to see their shooting go cold to start the second quarter. New York used an 8-0 run in the opening 4:28 of the second to pull within 13. Unfortunately, that was the closest they'd get the remainder of the half as Memphis went into the break ahead by 21.
New York came out aggressive in the third and cut its deficit by nine points at 68-56. The Knicks shot 50 percent with an 8-for-16 effort that was aided by six makes at the free-throw line.
After seeing the lead extended to 15 points early in the fourth, the Knicks reeled off a 16-6 run in a span of 5:44 to pull within five at 77-72. The Grizzlies responded with a 13-5 run of their own in the final 3:03 of the contest to end the game with a 16-point edge.
New York had two players notch 10 or more points with 15 coming from Wesley Witherspoon and 13 from Artsiom Parakhouski, who also tied for the game-high in rebounds with eight of his own.
The Knicks return to action on Sunday at 1:00 pm against the Phoenix Suns, while the Grizzlies have two days off before their Tuesday matinee (3:00 pm) vs. the Washington Wizards. Both games will be played in the Cox Pavilion.
