Summer League: Hawks 102, Wizards 82

Posted Friday July 13, 2012 7:22PM

The Atlanta Hawks (1-0) soared past the Washington Wizards (0-1) in the first game of the 2012 NBA Summer League by a 20-point margin, 102-82, at UNLV's Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The Hawks trailed by three early in the contest before they turned the deficit into a nine-point cushion that eventually ballooned to 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Atlanta's offense, which shot 54.2 percent (39-of-72) in the game, was led by 19-point efforts from Keith Benson and John Jenkins. Benson made 9-of-12 shots from the field, while adding six rebounds. Jenkins was 7-of-13 overall with four three-pointers, four assists and three boards.

The Wizards got 42 combined points from Bradley Beal, the third overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, and Chris Singleton. Beal scored a game-high 22 points with nine coming from the free throw line. Singleton chipped in 20 points and eight rebounds.

In the first quarter, the Hawks slowly built a nine-point lead, 16-7, only to see Washington call a timeout afterwards that helped lower the deficit to three points at 18-15. Unfortunately, that was the closest the Wizards would get the remainder of the game, as Atlanta closed out the stanza ahead by eight, 23-15, with help from a 5-0 run.

Atlanta kept the hammer down and expanded its lead to double digits early in the second before maintaining a 20-plus advantage for the second half.

A key factor for Atlanta's win was its offensive production in the paint, which was 46-24 at the end of regulation. The Hawks owned a 20-6 edge in paint points after the first 20 minutes of action.

Washington returns to action Saturday at 7:00 pm against the Houston Rockets, while Atlanta will wait until Sunday to square off against San Antonio at 5:00 pm. Both games will be played in the Cox Pavilion.
