Dec. 24, 2007 -- STATS goes inside the numbers and provides a weekly look at the most noteworthy boxscore happenings in the NBA. This is the eighth installment of the season, covering games from Dec. 17-24.
Dwyane Wade and LeBron James will be squaring off on Christmas Day in Cleveland. Since 2005-06, the two players have split their six head-to-head meetings, with Wade averaging 34.0 points, 6.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds in those contests, while James has put up 35.0 points, 7.5 assists and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Dwyane Wade made 20-of-22 free throws in the Heat’s 117-111 overtime loss to the Hawks last Wednesday. Since the beginning of last season, a player has made at least 20 free throws in a game six times, with three of those coming by Wade.
Chris Kaman has recorded a double-double in each of his last 12 games, good for the longest active such streak in the league. Kaman, whose career best in rebounds per game entering this season was 9.6 in 2005-06, is averaging 14.0 rebounds in 2007-08, which would be the highest by a player who had never previously averaged double figures in rebounds since Bob McAdoo grabbed 15.1 boards per contest in 1973-74.
Antawn Jamison is currently averaging 21.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.7 three-point field-goals made per game in 2007-08. Only three players in NBA history have averaged at least 20 points, 10 boards and one three per game in a single season – Charles Barkley (1994-95), Antoine Walker (1997-98) and Shawn Marion (2005-06).
The Portland Trail Blazers, extending their winning streak to 10 games last week, are the 138th team in the shot clock era (since 1954-55) to have a double-digit win streak in a season. Only two of those clubs, the 1970-71 Boston Celtics and the 1977-78 New Orleans Jazz, failed to make the playoffs.
Portland will be going for its 11th consecutive win on Tuesday against Seattle. The Trail Blazers have also won 12 straight games on December 25 since losing their first-ever contest on Christmas Day to Chicago in 1971-72. The SuperSonics, meanwhile, are 0-10 all-time on Christmas.
Golden State, which went 4-1 on an east coast trip from November 18-24, completed a 3-2 road trip with its win in Cleveland on Sunday. It is the first time the Warriors have had two winning road trips of five or more games in the same season since 1973-74.
The Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Indiana Pacers, 131-118 on Friday after trailing by a score of 40-20 at the end of the first quarter. The 131 points by Minnesota were the most by a team that scored 20 points or less in the opening quarter in a non-overtime contest since the Pacers beat the Atlanta Hawks, 137-117 on April 1, 1992 after scoring just 20 points in the first.
