Mar. 31, 2008 -- STATS goes inside the numbers and provides a weekly look at the most noteworthy boxscore happenings in the NBA. This is the twenty-second installment of the season, covering games from Mar. 24 - 30.
The Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets will play back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday. Dating back to 2004-05, the two teams have combined to score an average of 228.9 points per game in their 13 meetings, the highest scoring output of any matchup in the league over that span.
Denver has averaged 117.9 points per game this March. That would be the highest scoring average by a team in any month since the Golden State Warriors averaged 118.0 points per game in March of the 1991-92 season.
Golden State travels to San Antonio on Tuesday, where the Warriors are 0-19 since Tim Duncan joined the Spurs in 1997-98, scoring 99 points or less in each contest. That is the franchise’s longest drought without scoring 100 points on the road against an opponent in the shot clock era (since 1954-55).
San Antonio has reached 50 wins for the ninth straight season. The Lakers (12 from 1979-80 to 1990-91) and Celtics (10 from 1958-59 to 1967-69 and 9 from 1979-80 to 1987-88) are the only other franchises with at least nine straight 50-win campaigns. Should the Spurs win at least six of their final eight games, they would become the only team in league history to win at least 57 games in eight straight seasons.
Lamar Odom had 23 points, 21 rebounds, five assists and five blocks in the Lakers’ 123-119 overtime win over the Warriors last Monday. He joined Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett and Marcus Camby as the only active players to have at least 20 points, 20 rebounds, five assists and five blocks in a single game throughout their careers.
Despite 53 points from Kobe Bryant, the Lakers lost to the Grizzlies, 114-111 at Staples on Friday. Los Angeles has now lost five home games to Memphis since 2004-05, tied with San Antonio and Phoenix for its most against any club over that span. Bryant attempted 17 three-pointers in Friday’s game, the most by a player in a single contest this season.
LeBron James was held to 13 points on 4-for-17 shooting from the field in Cleveland’s 85-71 loss at Detroit on Saturday. James has been held under 20 points on the road just one other time this season, also at Detroit on November 28, when he scored 15 points in the first half before leaving with a sprained finger. James’ 19.9 career scoring average at Detroit is his lowest on the road against any team in the league.
Jason Richardson (211) and Rashard Lewis (200) have joined Quentin Richardson (226 with Phoenix in 2004-05) and Damon Jones (225 with Miami in 2004-05) as the only players in NBA history to make at least 200 three-pointers in their first season with a team.
