Jan. 14, 2008 -- STATS goes inside the numbers and provides a weekly look at the most noteworthy boxscore happenings in the NBA. This is the eleventh installment of the season, covering games from Jan 7- 13.
Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire combined to hit 25 of their 33 field-goal attempts on Saturday, as both players scored over 30 points in the Suns’ 122-114 win over Milwaukee. The combined .758 shooting by the players was the highest by a pair of teammates who each scored over 30 points since Kevin Garnett and Tom Gugliotta hit 25 of their 32 field goals (.781) for Minnesota against Golden State on March 30, 1997.
Andrew Bynum is shooting .636 from the field for the Lakers this season. Wilt Chamberlain is the only player in Lakers’ history who has shot better from the field in a single season (minimum five attempts per game). Chamberlain shot .649 from the field in 1971-72 and then topped that mark by hitting an NBA-record .727 of his shots in 1972-73.
Led by Jason Richardson’s 34 points, the Charlotte Bobcats handed the Boston Celtics just their fourth loss of the season, 95-83 in Boston last Wednesday. Richardson and Gerald Wallace have combined to average 51.0 points per game since Christmas, the highest scoring average by any duo in the Eastern Conference.
Allen Iverson, 21 points and 13 assists, and Anthony Carter, 21 points and 11 assists, became just the third pair of current teammates to have 20 points and 10 assists in the same game in the Nuggets’ 113-103 win over Orlando on Friday. The other duos to do so are Tracy McGrady and Rafer Alston of the Rockets (April 14, 2007) and Steve Nash and Boris Diaw of the Suns (March 5, 2006).
Andris Biedrins shot just 1-for-3 from the field in Golden State’s 106-91 loss in Portland on Wednesday, snapping his streak of 29 straight games shooting at least .500 from the field. That is the longest such streak by any active player, eclipsing Shaquille O’Neal’s mark of 27 straight games from January 7 – March 18, 2001.
The Lakers connected on their first eight field-goal attempts in their 109-80 win over the New Orleans Hornets last Wednesday. That is the most consecutive shots made by a team to start a game in 2007-08. Los Angeles also hit its first eight field-goal attempts against the Hornets in Oklahoma City on January 20, 2007.
The Dallas Mavericks enter this week with the league’s longest active win streak at seven games. They have held each of their last 10 opponents under 100 points, something they’ve managed to do just two other times in franchise history (13 straight from January 14 – February 9, 2006 and 12 straight from December 15, 2006 – January 5, 2007).
The Indiana Pacers blew a 16-point lead in their 129-122 overtime loss to the Suns last Wednesday and a 17-point lead in Sunday’s defeat against the Warriors. For the season, Indiana has lost five games in which it has held a lead of at least 15 points. No other team has more than two such losses in 2007-08.
