AT&T Center Turning Green
San Antonio – Spurs Sports and Entertainment announced today that is has entered into an agreement with CPS Energy for the AT&T Center to be powered solely by Windtricity for the next two years.
According to Chairman and CEO Peter Holt the agreement is all part of an initiative to make the AT&T Center the “greenest arena” in the country. “As an organization, we are extremely excited about this, and it is only the first step. We are exploring recycling and water conservation ideas as well. We really want to be a model for arenas across the country regarding sensitivity to the environment,” said Holt.
For CPS Energy, it’s a testament to the power of the Windtricity movement. “We are thrilled to have someone of the Spurs organization stature as a part of our Windtricity portfolio. We continue to do everything we can to educate the public on the importance of reducing our dependence on traditional energy sources, and the fact that our own arena will offset the power it uses with clean, renewable, Windtricity is huge for our community,” said CPS Energy Chairwoman Aurora Geis.
Today’s press conference was attended by several elected officials representing the area around the AT&T Center including City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil and County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson. But, perhaps the biggest cheerleader on hand was Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
“This is our arena – owned by the citizens of Bexar County- and I am just so proud of the fact that I can stand here before you today and say this is not only the home of the World Champion San Antonio Spurs, but this facility is leading the way in environmental efficiences,” said Judge Wolff.
The AT&T Center actually began being powered by Windtricity on June 1st. Windtricity is a renewable energy option provided by CPS Energy where electricity generated by windpowered turbines in West Texas, can be purchased by commercial and residential customers.
