Spurs Sign Romain Sato
The 6-5, 205-pound Sato was drafted by San Antonio with the 52nd overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.
The 23-year-old Sato played four years at Xavier University where he sat a record for career three-point field goals with 307. He finished third on Xavier’s all-time scoring list (2,005 points) and eighth in rebounds (892), the only guard ranked among the school’s top 15 in rebounding. Sato is one of only four players in Musketeer history to rank in the top 10 in school history in both scoring and rebounding (David West, Tyrone Hill and Brian Grant are the others). He also set a school record with 130 career starts.
During the 2003-04 season, Sato earned AP All-American Honorable Mention honors and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team after averaging 16.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 37 games. He led the Musketeers in rebounding and free-throw percentage and was second in scoring while being selected to the A-10 All-Defensive Team for the third straight season. Sato also helped lead Xavier to its first trip to the Elite Eight, averaging 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds while earning NCAA Tournament All-Regional Team honors.
