| SBC Center Construction Update |
September 2002
- The projected timeline for the SBC Center is currently on schedule. The groundbreaking took place in August 2000. In December, the first signs of construction were underway, moving 265,00 cubic yards of dirt, equivalent to 17,667 truck loads.
- The crew spent January and February working on the first major phase of the parking lot construction. There will be 7,000 on-site parking spaces by October 2002.
- The first concrete pour occurred in May 2001, involving 150 concrete trucks for the six- hour process.
- By June 2001 the building was beginning to come out of the ground, and three distinct levels were visible above the courtside level by late summer.
- The first roof truss was placed on October 12, 2001, with the building being fully enclosed by April 2002. The last roof truss was installed on February 7, 2002.
- On Saturday, July 27, 2002, the Ice Floor was poured.
- The LED fascia panels encircling the bowl have been installed.
- By Mid August, a majority of seating had been installed.
- Landscaping and sidewalks are progressing at the East Entry. Paving will begin mid-September.
- The SBC Center has let contracts for $104,901,595.
- Local participation from small, minority and women-owned businesses is at 33 percent, far exceeding the commitment of 20 percent.
- The SBC Center will open in Fall 2002. The doors will open in time to host the Spurs first preseason game in mid October. Other uses of the building include: Rodeo – 17,000 seats nearly doubles seating offered in the Coliseum; Rampage Hockey – 13,500 seats; Boxing – 19,000 seats; Concerts – around 15,000 seats; Basketball (WNBA and Spurs) – 18,500 seats
