Spurs Head Coach Gregg
Popovich:
On the play of Tim Duncan - "He’s our heart and soul out there so we ask him to do everything. He scored, he rebounds, he blocks shots, he plays defense; he is a wonderful basketball player as we all know. He did that tonight as he does every night.”
On if he felt optimistic at half time being down only eight despite poor play - “I was concerned. The only thing I was optimistic about was that we played pretty good defense. Nick (Van Exel) hit some pretty tough shots that were contested. I think there were four threes and three of them were contested really well. We felt we played pretty good defense, but we were concerned about the turnovers, I think we had ten at half. Turnovers and free throws were always a problem for us, so we were concerned about the turnovers. We thought Dallas did a good job defensively; we didn’t score for a pretty good period. It was five minutes at least, maybe longer.”
On the free throws - “When you get down to the last four teams. They are all pretty mature and experienced teams. They understand the next game is important and don’t look ahead.”

David Robinson:
On Dirk Nowitzki’s Injury - "It didn’t look like anybody hit him really hard. It just looked like he twisted it. I hope it’s not too bad."
On playing the Mavs different - “They are a very dangerous, very tough team and we’re going to play the same way whether he’s (Nowitzki) out there or not.”

Tim Duncan:
On when the Spurs decided to start switching on the pick-and-rolls - "It was a halftime switch for us. They got used to our hedges, so we wanted to give them a different look for a little while. It turned out we played that way for the whole second half, basically. We switched up and got guys in front of them. We took away a lot of their open shots because they were getting a lot of pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops. Dirk and Michael were getting open jump shots and knocking them out, so we started switching and kept guys in front of them. We did a great job on the weak-side help if they did drive."
On if the play of Tony Parker in the third quarter opened things up for him – “Absolutely, he was great; hitting his shots, being aggressive in the open court. We talked about it at halftime; those guys defended well in the second quarter, and then they pushed it right back at us. If we did get a stop or if they scored, we walked it back up the court. We want to be a lot more aggressive coming back at them if we did get a stop; making them pay for trying to get a quick basket and being spread out. Tony took it upon himself to push it back up the court and make them pay for it.”
On the free throws - "We didn’t work on it any more that usual. Everybody knows the importance of making free throws. The last game we missed sixteen; that was a game we should have had. We don’t want to be in that situation again."

Stephen Jackson:
On the game - "Our defense kept putting pressure on them the whole game till the buzzer. I think that’s what helped us out in the 4th quarter."
On the Loss of Nowitzki – “It will hurt them, but they have a lot of great guys on their team."

Tony Parker:
On getting open looks - "“When you play with a guy like Timmy it’s easy. You get a lot of open shots because they throw a lot of double teams at him and he is so dominant."
On coach Pop making Tony more aggressive – “At the beginning (of the season) he tried to make me become a John Stockton. I think now he understands I’m more like Isaiah Thomas. He’s just going to let me play my game now. More as a scoring point guard."

Mavericks Head Coach Don Nelson:
On the game - "This was probably the best we’ve played defensively all year, certainly all playoffs. We were really good in the first half and they are really good defensively and the combination of the way we played in the first half was one of the best halves we’ve had in the playoffs. We couldn’t sustain it, but we were really solid in our double-teams, rotations and our game plan. I couldn’t be prouder of the team at halftime, we still played a very good game for a long period of time and then they started to have their way with us in the second half. They are incredibly strong as a defensive unit."
On Dirk Nowitzki - "The news on Dirk Nowitkzi is not good. His knee is very sore. He twisted it somehow and it is a strain. He will get a MRI tomorrow and I wouldn’t expect that he would play the next game and I wouldn’t be sure that he would play in the series. I am not a doctor, but I don’t think we should take a gamble or a chance on Nowitzki. I told Dirk he must feel 100% for me to play him again in the series. From the looks of him tonight, that is probably not going to happen and I am not going to jeopardize Dirk Nowitzki’s career."
On Tim Duncan - “Tim Duncan gets the game ball. We could not control him. We were blitzing, double-teaming the screen and rolls, trying to get the balls out of his hands. He found ways to make us pay with the pass and the shot. He was sensational.”

Steve Nash:
On the game - "We don’t feel like we are in a bad position. We would have liked to get two here but the bottom line is tonight we didn’t play well enough to win. We didn’t deserve this one. We got frustrated by some things early. You can’t do that. You can’t fret about things that are out of your control and you have to hold it in; hold it together. You have to relax and play through it. In the second half we did a better job of trying to overcome adversity. We have to continue to do that.”

Michael Finley:
On Don Nelson’s ejection - "The ejection didn’t have an effect on us. It didn’t get us motivated to play better. That thing with the referee was between him and the ref. We as players have to play.
“From what I saw of the confrontation with the ref and Nelly, I think he was right in his argument. The refs had to set the tone. They let the coaches and players know they weren’t taking anything."
On mindset after the loss - "We’re fine mentally. Our mindset to get two games would have been great, but to get one is okay. It’s up to us to go home and play the way we’re capable of playing. We haven’t played a great game yet.”

Dirk Nowitzki:
On the injury - "I don’t really know what happened. It happened really quick. Somebody, I think it was Ginobili that fell on my leg. I don’t know what I did. Next thing I know, my knee was hurting pretty bad…I’ve never had a knee injury before so really the pain is new to me. I couldn’t move my leg anymore.”
On mental state - “It’s a bad break but we’ll just have to see how it feels tomorrow. I’m going to get an MRI tomorrow. This series is still a long ways from being over.”
On playing Sunday - "It doesn’t make sense if I’m not 100%. The first night it’s a little weird after suffering an injury, but like I said, we’ll see how it feels tomorrow and see what the MRI says. I can always play through some pain."

Nick Van Exel:
On getting his sooting rhythm back - "In the first half it was pretty good, but in the second half they (Spurs) came out, turned it up tremendously on the defensive end and then they executed their offense. Tony Parker got going and Tim did his usually thing. It was just a tough night for us in the second half.”
On Tony Paker in the 3rd Quarter - “He did a great job of using the pick-n-roll. He waited for our big men to clear out of there and then he used the big men to get into the paint and then when he got into the paint, he has a lot of good up fakes. He was able to get our guards into the air and created space for himself to get his little shot up and it worked tremendously for him in the second half.”
On Dirk Nowitzki going down - "At that time it was already down. We picked it up a little bit, but they had a big enough lead to sustain anything we tried to do. It was terrible that he went down like that, but they had already turned up their defense."
