SPURS 110, Lakers 82

Postgame Quotes: 05/15/03

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich:

On the game - "Well of course that feels pretty good. We’ve had a tough couple of years with this team and to finally to play well enough to beat such a great team. This is a great group of guys individually, great group as a team and what they’ve accomplished is really beyond my comprehension. I’m probably even going to enjoy this more tomorrow. But right now, I’m just thrilled the guys played so well. We finally played the defensive in the second half that got us to this point. It’s been a little bit sporadic during the series at times. They did a fine job tonight in the second half, took care of the basketball and it was a wonderful win for us obviously."

On Tim Duncan - “Tim Duncan is a fantastic competitor as we all know. But I thought in Game 5 and Game 6, he was astounding in his focus. Not just with his game, he had obviously decided to be aggressive and try to make great decisions between him scoring and trusting his teammates, that’s something he always has to do. He pulled everyone else along the last two games.”

David Robinson:

On the victory - "I really felt like it was going to be a great series. The way we played all year long, I felt like we just had established a nice rhythm and we were going to play well. I knew we were going to play well. I was not surprised at how much they fought us. I thought for the most part of the series we really controlled the tempo, we did a lot of good things. They just showed a lot of heart. They fought us tooth and nail. We were up 20 something the other day, to come back and almost win the game, which would have been a heartbreaker for us. They played like champions. Those guys, Shaq and Kobe were awesome. I just felt like as a team we were very deep, we’re a very good defensive team. We’ve just been playing so well lately, even on the road."

On Tony Parker - “He did a great job of getting us that lead early and putting us in the position to jump out of the gates. His aggressiveness not only on the offensive end, but the defensive end is important for us to come out and set a tone. He really helped us do that early, and we were able to carry that intensity throughout the game.”

Tim Duncan:

On David Robinson - "I do not think you need any motivation to try to run for a championship. It is additional motivation. He has been great to the town of San Antonio, he has been great to me, and it would mean so much to end it this way."

On the game – “They didn’t make some shots for a stretch there… those guys have come back in games that we have been up so much. We just did not want to let up all. We just wanted to play it all the way through to the end. They are the three time defending Champs and they tried to make a run. Luckily our defense was pretty good. I thought that Bruce [Bowen] and Mano [Emanuel Ginobili] and Jack [Stephen Jackson] and those guys did a great job with making every shot that Kobe got tough. We got a couple turnovers down the stretch there and Tony Parker did a great job of getting in that middle and making some shots.”

On scoring role shifting in this series - "It was a little difficult at first because after being used to getting 10-shots, and knowing the double team was coming, my teammates did an incredible job making shots and really taking over that first series. Then coming in to this series they decided to let me do what I had to do and shut down everybody else. It kind of came hard because some of my shots didn’t feel great early on… We won the series and made some shots. It is great."

Bruce Bowen:

On the game - "Our last game we did not finish the way we wanted to, and it was kind of blessing in disguise so-to-speak. It gave us a chance to come out more focused tonight. You always want to win big, but the way we let the lead go that time forced us to concentrate this game."

On the difference from Game 5 to Game 6 - “I think last game. We were not happy with the way we finished the that game, so we understood that we had to come out and do things differently, try to get the lead and just sustain it this time.”

Bruce Bowen on Tim Duncan - “That is the MVP of the league. He knew he had to step up big in the fourth quarter this whole season… and he just took it to another level in the playoffs.”

Tony Parker:

On learning from mistakes - "We are a young team and we have to learn from our mistakes, and we learned a lot from Game 5. In Game 6 we did not make the same mistakes."

On Coach Pop - “I thank Coach Pop [Popovich]. You need to give him a lot of credit… He gave me, Mano [Emanuel Ginobili] and Jack [Stephen Jackson] a lot of freedom. He called plays for us, and tried to create and penetrate… We have a lot of weapons out there.”

Malik Rose:

On Tim Duncan - "That is MVP basketball… I tip my hat off to that man. That man is a true professional. He is the leader of this bunch, and he is why we are where we are right now."

On closing out the series in Game 6 - “All the games in the regular season and even some of in the playoffs we lost our big leads because we didn’t do those things in the fourth quarter. We just took advantage of things. We had them down, smelt blood and just put our foot on them and pushed them all the way down.”

Lakers Head Coach Phil Jackson:

On the game - "I would like to congratulate the Spurs on winning this series. They played a great second half against us that really took the air out of the building and out of the game. It was a wonderful run they gave from the third minute of the 3rd quarter to the 6th minute of the 4th quarter. They left no doubt that they were the better team in this series."

On feelings tonight - "We are severely disappointed we couldn’t make a run for the championship and get our opportunity to win a fourth. It tells us something about how difficult it is and how much dedication and discipline you have to have to win 4 years in a row. We’ve had a great run and we’ve had our fans support us tremendously. We had a great play. We gotten a little bit older, we suffered some injuries, we had a difficult year, as I told them , in the locker room about 40 minutes ago after the ball game. We talked sincerely about making correct steps from the beginning of our season to the end, which places us in a position to win. When you make correct decisions and do thing correctly your expectations of winning are fulfilled especially when you put the effort in. This year we couldn’t do that, we couldn’t make the correct steps. We stumbled, we fell, we had inconsistencies, we lacked some discipline as a basketball club and we paid the price for it."

Kobe Bryant:

On championships - "I haven’t had a chance to think about it during our run. Right now I was just sitting in the locker room thinking about the series and this season and how upset I am about losing. It is amazing at how fast time flies. It makes me realize how you have to take advantage of every opportunity that you have. Careers go by so fast."

On tonight - "I think every year you try to repeat. But what you have to understand is that teams reload and they restock and they try to dethrone you. They reloaded with the right ammo with what they needed to battle. We had an opportunity and they played like a better team this series. We put up a good fight we took this team to six games. We had a few pieces of the puzzle go down, which shortened up our bench a lot but nonetheless we still had a opportunity to win this series."

Shaquille O'Neal:

On the game - "It’s been an unusual year, we had a lot of things happen. I just think that this year the Spurs were a better team. They shot the ball well, they never game up. My guys came out tonight, but Spurs played well in the fourth quarter and ran with it. It is very disappointing, however this is a time that our injured guys can get better."

On the better team - "The Spurs were the better. We beat them the past two years. We knew what we were capable of. We just never kept that fire. The Spurs were the team this year.”

On the season - “We had an unbelievable run. When Phil came we enjoyed nothing but success. This is the first time we’re not feeling success. We just have to suck it up and start this all over again next year. A lot of things caught up with the team. Injuries…we struggled to win 50 games, if we didn’t let a few of those games slip away we could have had fourth place. We were a totally different team this year and it caught up with us. But now we can rest and regroup and hopefully start a new run this year. Good thing about american sports is that there’s always a next year.”

Robert Horry:

On the game - "Personally, I haven’t felt this low since the death of my grandmother. This is pretty low to me. You never expect go out like this, 20 plus points on your home court. It seemed like every thing was going well, then all of the sudden everything went wrong.”

On the Spurs - “People are going to say we were the better team, but they played extremely well. They had a game plan and executed it extremely well and we didn’t execute as well as we should have. You just have to take your hat off to those guys.”
