Spurs Head Coach Gregg
Popovich:
On the game - "I was pleased with our defense tonight, as I have been every night, because that’s how we win games. We’re a little up-and-down defensively, but if our defense stays steady, we have an opportunity to win basketball games. I was pleased to see we did that again tonight."
On Tony Parker’s play - "Tony’s been important to us all year, his scoring. When he scores, we’re really tough. And we just haven’t gotten that the first couple of games. Him making some shots tonight, being aggressive, was really big for us.”
“Tony Parker’s are starting point guard. Someone has a bad game or two, you don’t just ship them off to Siberia. You stick with them, continue to puff them up, show confidence in them. If someone’s not playing well, we’ll make a substitution. We’ll do what we need to do to win a basketball game, but going in the thought was not that we were going to flip-flop those guys.”
On winning despite just six shots from Duncan - “They tried to take Timmy out of the game. They don’t want to let him take shots and luckily he’s a very mature, wonderful player. He knows what it takes to win, so he’s happy to get assists, get blocks and get rebounds."
On the bench outscoring the Suns’ reserves 29-13 - “Our bench has been huge for us all year long. When we can bring Malik (Rose) off the bench, and Manu (Ginobili), and Speedy (Claxton), those guys have been big for us. Spotting guys like Danny Ferry and Steve Smith, those guys have been huge for us at times, too. Steve gave us some real good minutes tonight. In the playoffs, you’re got to use eight or nine guys. Five or six just isn’t going to get it done, so the bench guys are important.”

Tim Duncan:
On the win - "That’s what we wanted to do. The tide has kind of turned. We were the ones shooting the ball badly and now they got a night of shooting the ball badly. Shots weren’t going down for them. We were contesting the shots on the inside and that’s the difference in the game right there, when shots go down it makes the game so much easier."
On Parker’s performance - "He kind of took over Stephon’s role from last game. Stephon did that in the first quarter and really took over the game. I thought Tony was great. He took his shot when it was there, he penetrated and kicked when it was there. He made great decisions all night. Their focus is to take me out of the game. Fine. If that’s what they want to do, we have to counter some way. We’re getting lay ups and wide open shots. So if we knock those things down, we kill them on the double team."

David Robinson:
On the game - "We know we’ve got a lot of guys that can make a lot of shots. The key is really to move that ball around and make smart basketball plays. That’s what they’re trying to make us do, make smart basketball plays. They’re jumping us, they’re double teaming us and they’re doing a lot of things. We have to move that ball around well and I just thought our passes were good. Obviously, our defense plays a big role when you hold them to 35 in the first half, but offensively I thought we did a great job of moving the ball around and getting open shots."
On his injured knee - "It was fortunate I had four or five days to really work on it. It started feeling pretty good about two days ago, and tonight I was pretty pleased with it."
On Tony Parker’s play - “You know, nobody’s going to hold Tony down too long. The first two games, he was disappointed with ‘em, but he knew he was going to come back at some point and start really making shots, and being aggressive. He was fantastic tonight. We didn’t get a lot of points from Tim, but Tim was a monster on the boards, and other guys just really picked it up tonight.”
On Tony’s demeanor leading up to Game 3 - “He’s been pretty serious. He’s been a little more serious than usual. I think he just understands that this is a whole ‘nother level and he’s going to lift it up. He’s already lifted it up to another level and I think he understands that now is the time when you really make your imprint. He’s doing a great job now.”
On what was said to Parker entering the game - “I don’t know what everybody (else) said to him. I told him as good as he’s been all year, he’s been one of the best point guards in the league, there’s no reason now why he’s not going to be. He’s got a lot of help here. It’s not all on his shoulders. He just has to come out and do his job, and he did a great job tonight. I thought he really responded well. Just like our team, we get a setback and we always respond really well from that. I think he’s kind of learned that from our team and he’s bounced back real well.”

Tony Parker:
On the game - "In San Antonio, you’ve always got pressure. You know, we want to win the championship so there’s pressure every time. It’s just like when you have bad days, you just have to focus more and try to work harder in practice, and try to take a couple extra shots. That’s maybe why Pop would said that I was more serious in practice. You know, you need to fight through it. I’m not going to let down. You play all that season and then in the first round, not playing good, you just have to fight through it."
On the difference in his play tonight compared to the first two games - "I was just ready. I took the same shots in the first two games. It’s just today they went in. That’s it. I found a good rhythm and it feels good when you make your first couple shots. I learned a lot from the first two games. You know, Tim’s helped me. I learned a lot on how to approach the game, how to attack, and it helped me. That’s why I played better in Game 3."
On his approach coming into the game - “Nothing special. I was not too worried. I was just missing a lot of shots. I just feel more strong now mentally and feel more ready now to play.”
On winning without a big offensive night from Duncan - “Every time he touched the ball he was double teamed and triple teamed. That’s why it’s so good to have a superstar that has so much confidence in his teammates. We’ve got a lot of confidence in this team. Timmy’s got a lot of confidence in Manu, Malik, me, Jack (Steve Jackson) and he knows that we’re going to make those shots.”
On getting advice from anyone - “I talked a little bit with my father. My father helped me a lot. You can always improve mentally. You think you’re strong, but you can always improve and I talked about that with my father. You know, I was not very worried. My teammates have a lot of confidence in me and I know they were not worried. You know, all the people try to talk to you, but my father helped me a lot. That’s what he’s here for, to help me a lot.”
On his matchup with Marbury - “He’s my toughest matchup since I’m in NBA. You know, he’s a tough guard and I know he’ll be back in Game 4 strong. That’s what I like about him and I’ve learned a lot from his attitude. He’s tough mentally and that’s a good example. I hope in two, three years to be like him, like every game you’re there. That’s great.”

Malik Rose:
On the game - "There are a couple more games we have to go and get before we can get out of this series. We have a big game on Sunday and really have to take care of that. Then we have to get home and take care of business there, where they beat us once. So the series is far from over, but we do feel pretty good."
On Duncan taking just six shots - "You know, when guys are shooting like they are, man, Tim knows how to get them the ball. They were really come at him hard like they have all series and we were due to make shots like that against their defense."
On his approach coming into the game - “Nothing special. I was not too worried. I was just missing a lot of shots. I just feel more strong now mentally and feel more ready now to play.”
On the Suns’ late surge - “We knew they were going to make a run. They’re in the playoffs for a reason and they were playing probably the hottest basketball in the league at the end of the year. So we braced ourselves for that. We didn’t want to let them make a run like that, but we knew it could happen and a sign of a good team is when you can respond and make a run of your own, and Tony was really instrumental in that. He just made some tough shots coming off that pick and roll, and kept us in. He kept afloat until we got back on a roll.”
On Tony being more serious the last few days - “He got a little down on himself, but I think Pop and a couple other guys did a good job of keeping him up and not really babying him, saying ‘It’s going to be all right.’ We even got a little tougher with him and told him, ‘Keep pushing. Keep pushing.’ That’s what he did and I tell you, it’s a great feeling I know he’s having to struggle against these guys for six games and then finally just break through and have a great game against these guys. I know he’s feeling great and he deserves it.”

Suns Head Coach Frank Johnson:
On the loss - "I look down here (at the box score), 3-for-6, and the guy (Tim Duncan) dominated the game. Eleven points, 23 rebounds, three blocks. He still is the difference maker in this series. Tony Parker came out. I think one of the writers asked if I was worried about Tony Parker coming out. Well, he played well."
On the Suns’ struggles to score - “I think for us, offensively, (we were) impatient. I think it was 36-20, we’re down by double digits, and we got (the deficit) down to 10. Why? Because we moved the ball. Then it was one pass, shot, one pass, shot. We can’t do it.”
On the Suns’ defense - "Just breakdowns. Not breakdowns on double-teams, just breakdowns when guys were left wide open and we’re not even matched up. Sometimes just in transition. We come down and guys are like, ‘Where’s my guy? Oh, I better go find him.’ Sometimes we’d have two guys matched up with a guy on the weak side. It’s not that they’re going to Duncan and we’re doubling and having trouble finding our guy, and making those kinds of mistakes. One time, (Manu) Ginobili hit a three on the side from out of bounds. He was open because we didn’t match up after we were making a run. Those are the kinds of breakdowns we cannot have. They made their open shots tonight. Parker made his. Jackson made his. Ginobili made his. Again, too often, we just left them wide-open without matching up.”
On being 1-2 in the series - “Am I concerned? Yes, I’m concerned. But we’ve been in a position before where we’ve had tough losses and I expect us to bounce back Sunday. We’ve got a group of guys who have not stopped playing all year. Even when we cut it to 10 with two minutes to go, we had our chances, then Stephen Jackson hit a big three.”
On the Spurs’ bench outscoring the Suns’ bench 88-34 - “That’s big. We’re not getting the offensive production from Joe (Johnson). He had nine rebounds, but as far as the scoring, we’re not getting it right now. Jake Voskuhl is probably our most productive guy coming off the bench offensively.”
On whether Game 4 is a must win if the Suns hope to win the series - “It makes it better. It certainly makes our chances better. We’ll come in Sunday ready. We’ll look at tape tomorrow and look at some of the breakdowns we had, and we’ll go from there.”

Stephon Marbury:
On the game - "It’s very frustrating, very frustrating to lose the game, period, let alone lose the home court advantage. But we’ve been in this situation, so we’ve just got to go back to the drawing board. We’ve been giving those guys a steady diet, and two or three days to prepare for it. We have to come with something different. We said we wanted to make those other guys beat us and they sure did tonight. Tony Parker had a great game tonight. He shot the ball extremely well. He was very aggressive. He really played well tonight."
On whether or not the Suns have to make changes - "Yes, as a team we definitely have to. We have to have a different scheme as far as attacking on the defensive end. We probably need to do the same things, but we have to do some things different."

Amare Stoudemire:
On the game - "We’re the type of team we don’t want to let anybody beat us. We should lock down and guard everybody out there. I’m pretty sure the coach is going to figure out our chemistry tomorrow in practice and lay it on us, and we’re going to go out there Sunday and perform."
“It was a tough game for us. We take so much pride in double-teaming on Tim Duncan, and the perimeter guys were doing a great job in knocking down jumpers.”
On losing on the same night he was presented the Rookie of the Year trophy - "It’s not really frustrating. It’s just something that we’ve got to work on tomorrow in practice in order to get the chemistry down. They did a great job of coming out and knocking down open jumpers and being very aggressive, and we weren’t looking forward to Tony Parker scoring 30 points. That was kind of an eye-opener for us, so we’ll be ready Sunday."
On the Suns’ outside shooting - “We had an off night tonight as far as shooting outside jumpers. I’m pretty sure Sunday we’ll have our game face on. We’re the underdogs again so we’re ready to step up to the challenge.”
On adjustments San Antonio has made -
“I think their adjustment is Tim Duncan just being patient, finding an open guy and having the open guy they can find be aggressive, and drive to the basket and then kick it out for the three-pointer. At the same time, we’re rotating to the different players and by the time we get to that guard that’s shooting the ball he’s already released it. I think our adjustment will be (to) rotate quick enough so that guard won’t be able to get the jumper off.”
On Tony Parker -
“He came out aggressive. The series was tied 1-1 and I’m pretty sure Tim Duncan sat him down and talked to him, along with David Robinson and told him, ‘Hey, be aggressive out there,’ and that’s what he did.”
On Joe Johnson’s struggles -
“I’m pretty sure Joe will step up. Everybody has their off night. Joe doesn’t have too many off nights in a row, so I’m pretty sure Joe’s going to step up Sunday night and perform pretty good.”

Shawn Marion:
On the game - "It’s frustrating, because they were knocking down some shots. What can you do? I think our defense was a little tentative tonight, but at the same time, they were hitting shots, so they played the game. You have to give it to them."
On double teaming Duncan
“They were loading up on the other side, and they were just waiting for it. They were expecting it, because he was passing it as soon as he got double-teamed, and they were waiting for it on the weak side.”
On adjustments for Game 4
“We’ve got to come out aggressive no matter what we do, that’s all.”
On the Spurs’ 51-35 rebounding edge
“We usually don’t get out-rebounded like that. In the rebound battles, most of the time we win the game. We’ve got to do something to get that back.”
On the Spurs’ success despite just six shots from Duncan
“I think they got used to us. Tim Duncan got used to us double-teaming so he’s throwing out of the double-team really quick. They started knocking down shots. That was our game plan, to make them shoot outside shots and they were hitting.”

Penny Hardaway:
On Toy Parker - "He just kept being aggressive and shooting the ball, and he made them tonight. He did a good job tonight."
On San Antonio’s open jumpers - "They were getting the majority of their wide-open shots because we were double teaming them. Most of our shots are contested but we just got to make them.
“When you play catch-up and then you know you’re going to leave two guys open for threes, and hopefully they’ll miss them. Tonight they made them. They got their confidence up. They had a big lead so there wasn’t any pressure for them to make them. They were relaxed out there and they made them tonight
.”
On adjustments to be made
“You just have to hope that Tony Parker doesn’t go for 30 points again and that those guy’s aren’t knocking down those jump shots like that. We just have to stick to the game plan.”
On trapping Duncan
“I think what’s happening now is they’re telling Tim not to hold the ball, to throw it out of the double team and then those guys attack. Don’t settle for threes. The first attacks and then if the second guy is open, then that’s where they throw the ball and they made shots tonight.”
