Silver & Black Give Back Launches Team Up Scholars Program

SAN ANTONIO (August 29, 2012) – Silver & Black Give Back is partnering with San Antonio-area universities to launch the Team Up Challenge Scholars Program, presented by AT&T. The Team Up Challenge Scholars Program will connect 40 college students with K-12 students participating in the 2012-2013 Team Up Challenge to serve as mentors for their service projects. Participating schools include Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, Trinity University, University of the Incarnate Word and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Expanding upon the Team Up Challenge initiative, the Scholars Program extension provides the participating Team Up Challenge students with an added resource in the planning and execution of their projects. Two college student mentors will be assigned to each of the 20 Team Up Challenge semifinalist teams and the Scholars will have the unique opportunity to mentor service-oriented youths in their community-enriching endeavors.

The Team Up Challenge is a youth-led service-learning initiative that encourages students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways. Students create projects that address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness or Uniformed Services. During the academic year, 20 semi‐finalist groups receive $2,500 to being their projects. In April, five champions receive $20,000 each for their work in the community.
