Minuto con Manu: To the Finals!

Spurs guard Emanuel Ginobili is regularly sharing the experiences of his rookie campaign in an online journal throughout the 2002-03 season. The first-year Argentine sensation filed this latest entry from the SBC Center, where the Spurs are preparing to take on the Dallas Mavericks for Games 1 and 2 of the Western Conference Finals. To the finals!

We got it...the moment we waited for so long finally CAME. It was tough, as it is for everybody, but it was definitely worth the effort. We beat the Mavs and now, in a couple days, we will be playing the NBA Finals, in front of an audience of 20,000 people, and who knows how many millions watching the game worldwide on TV.

I think that if I had to choose a way to win this game before playing it, I would have chosen what we did. Opinions were widely spread on our lack of character, on our performance during forth periods and everything, so I loved winning the game this way, I think we showed this could happen to everybody. Especially in the NBA, with such good players, anything can happen.

The brain can play dirty tricks on you sometimes. Even if you don’t want to, when you are leading the game by 20 points, you unconsciously think, “it’s over,” but after a couple of minutes, when the opponent scores a couple of three-pointers and gets closer, EVERYTHING CHANGES. One of the teams starts turning for the worse and the other one becomes incredibly self-confident. This is the way score changes, the good thing about it is that we showed we are not the only one.

Undoubtedly, Dallas is an incredible team, and if they are right for the basket they can have a 30 points lead against any team…this is because of their game style, they always play the same, whether they are leading by 20 or losing by 15. Nowitski’s absence was a hard thing for them to deal with, but even if we know how valuable an all-star is for a team, I don’t think it was the main factor for their defeat. Considering three of their other players such as Nash, Finley and Van Exel, I don’t think high score is really a problem.

The finals are next (GUAUUUU) and for you to notice how hard it is to get where we are, check this out:

  • Kevin Willis, 19 NBA seasons, 0 finals
  • Steve Smith, 13 seasons, 0 finales.
  • David Robinson, 14 seasons, 1 final.

I feel really lucky to have this opportunity, and I will enjoy it as much as possible, be sure about it. I will do my best and more if possible, to give this story a happy ending.

Cheers for everybody and thanks a lot for your support and affection.

See you next time, which will be probably when this story comes to an end.
