Spurs Mailbag: Danny Green - Jan. 30, 2012

Tim Weber
Question: How easy of a transition was it when you first joined the Spurs? Who helped you the most?

Danny Green: I think it was easier for me coming from Carolina and also Cleveland where they do a lot of the same systems. They do the same sets there, which helped me adjust to that, and the assistant coaches have done a great job of helping me transition with the other things, with the daily vitamin stuff, working with Chad and Chip every morning helping me adjust, and just my teammates pushing me as well. But like I said, coming from Carolina and playing under Mike Brown has helped me to adjust to the system and pick up the system faster than anybody normally would.

Question:
How does it feel to play in the AT&T Center?

DG: It's a great feeling. Anytime you get a chance to play in front of a big crowd is always good I feel like, for any basketball player.  Those are big games and big stages, and the ATT&T Center is a great arena that allows players to feel like they're on a big stage.

Question: What do you do before a game as a ritual or to get you hype?

DG: No, not necessarily. I'm not superstitious or anything, there's nothing I do over and over. I do pray before every game, but other than that there's nothing really that I do consistently every game that's a ritual.

Question: Who's the funniest person on the team? What's the funniest moment with that person?

DG: I think DeJuan is one of the funniest guys to be around. I hang around him more than anyone else does that's why he's funny to me. But on the plane he's just really funny, and behind DeJuan I'd say Pop. He's one of the funniest coaches I've ever had to play for, just his sarcasm sometimes is really funny to me. You see it in the locker room, you see it in his interviews, and when he yells at us sometimes, you want to be serious and I do take is seriously, but when he has sarcasm in his yelling you can't help but to laugh sometimes.

Ben Hunt
Question: Have you seen some of his interviews and how he interacts with the media?

DG: I've seen some of the interviews, and yeah it's kinda funny, but the way he interacts with us is a whole other level, so I don't know if you guys will get a chance to see that. But he's a very funny coach and he's been a joy to be around and play for.

Question: Who was your favorite NBA player when you were young?

DG: Michael Jordan. I used to watch him, the Bulls were my favorite team to watch because I was a Michael Jordan fan.

Carlos Olszewski Jr.

Question: Besides basketball what's your favorite hobby?

DG: I'm a big movie buff. That's pretty much all I have time for right now, we don't have time to do much else. I like to go to movies whenever I get a chance, and I have a pet, so I'm into animals and I do movies.

DG: Because I couldn't get the number fourteen, which was my number in college and high school growing up. It was a town number, there's a history behind it. I didn't get a chance to get it when I was here obviously, because it's Gary Neal's number. One day hopefully I can talk him into changing it, but it's closest to four, twenty-four was taken.

Ben Hunt
Question: What's the story behind 14?

DG: Growing up in the town, I used to play football, and the head football coach for my town, his brother used to wear fourteen and he had passed away. So the leading captain or the best leader would wear number fourteen, it used to be a quarterback or running back, in honor of his name. When I transferred schools I kinda took the number with me, I've kept it going since then.

Question: Which teammate do you click with best on the court?

DG: I click pretty well with a lot of these guys. DeJuan, me and DeJuan get along really good. I click with Tony pretty well, Rich pretty well, and Cory for the few minutes that he's out there. I would say probably Rich and Tony are the guys that I click with the most, Tony's always finding me in the corners and Rich is easy to find when I'm dribbling the ball because he's always in the corner.

Question: How much has your confidence increased this season?

DG: It's increased a lot, just being able to get out on the floor and get some minutes. For them to put me on the floor and get the minutes I've been getting just lets me know they trust me. I'm just able to each game play with more confidence and just play my game instead of worrying, looking over my shoulder worrying about making mistakes.

Karthik
Question: How does it feel to have Pop's trust now that he's been playing you in a lot of key moments of the game?

DG: I think that's the most important thing, Pop's trust is more important than anyone else's trust here. That's the trust you need to earn, and I guess I've earned a little bit of his trust and that's good, especially in the fourth quarter. Hopefully I can continue to keep his trust in me and keep playing consistently.

Question: How do you think the Spurs' chemistry as team has helped you as a player?

DG: I think it's a big part of basketball, just the team's chemistry off the court, the culture, and how they act in the locker room. They keep it very professional here, and its pretty easy—you come here, you do your job, you get your business done. And also off the court, everybody interacts. They're really good guys, they don't pick up guys that are knuckleheads here so we have a group full of guys that are intelligent and very professional. They do the right thing, and are easy to work with.

DG: Well obviously Tony's had to pick up a lot of the slack, he's had to play a lot more. Timmy as well, everybody's had to pick it up more. That's the only difference I think, everybody's got to pick up their intensity more, their energy more, because Manu was a big piece of the puzzle and it hasn't really affected anybody but it's definitely opened up opportunities for the younger guys and pretty much made us grow up faster.

Question:
What would your advice be to youngs people who are looking to be in your position today?

DG: Never give up on your dreams, no matter what people tell you. If you don't believe in yourself, why should anybody else? You've got to believe in yourself and continue to push for what it is you want. I've been in back, and I'm here where I want to be. I did the D-League thing, I went overseas, and eventually I got to where I want to be. And now I'm in the NBA and I'm playing some minutes. Opportunities will come, you've just got to be ready to take advantage of it, be ready when the opportunity comes.
