The Broadway Deli is your classic Jewish style deli. I half expected to see "The Larry David" on the lunch menu. I was really hungry so I contemplated some all-day breakfast to supplement my sandwich, but decided to go with some matzo ball soup instead. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and BK went with the Turkey Pastrami. The shopping opportunities of 3rd were too great for my wife to resist. So she left us alone to catch up while she went to find a sale.
The chicken salad had some interesting herbs, which added some good flavor. The matzo ball soup was also good. There wasn't really anything that stood out about the lunch, but it was solid. After finishing our sandwiches, we resisted the temptation to order from the amazing dessert menu and asked for the check. And then waited a really long time for it. The sandwiches were solid and I had a great visit with BK.
I usually don't mention the service because to me it sounds too cliche'. Most every food reviewer/blogger acts like some superior snob and goes on and on about everything wrong with a place. They pick at every detail because I think it makes them feel empowered and credible. I don't like to do that. I know a good sandwich when I eat one and that's that. But I feel like it would be irresponsible not to in this case. The service was terrible. It took forever to place our order and we only saw our server two more times… once when she dropped off the sandwiches and a second time when she dropped off the check. I normally don't care about that kind of stuff but even I wanted to say, "What the heck?"
Sorry Santa Monica, but the Hoagie Grail does not seem to reside within your city this year. But I'll be back next season so don't give up…
Sandwich Quote of the day: I ordered a chicken sandwich but I think the waitress misunderstood me because she said, "How would you like your eggs?" So I tried to answer her anyhow. I said "Incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked and then cut up then put onto a grill then put onto a bun… it's gonna take awhile. I don't have time, scrambled!"
Song of the day: This one goes out to Spurs Media Director and Vermont's finest, Tom James:
