Through our unique resources and opportunities, we work to creatively engage young people to enrich their communities.

We will use the SS&E platform to challenge, communicate and collaborate with our community to make meaningful impressions and lasting improvements through service learning initiatives.

Silver & Black Give Back is a 501(c)(3) public charity. The charity was originally created in 1988, when there was only one team in the SS&E family and has historically been known as the Spurs Foundation. The new name reflects the work it does in conjunction with all of the SS&E teams; the Spurs (NBA), Rampage (AHL), San Antonio Stars (WNBA) and Austin Spurs (NBA Developmental League).

Mission: Through our unique resources and opportunities, we work to creatively engage young people to enrich their communities.

Silver & Black Give Back serves as a fundraising conduit for youth sports and education based service programs throughout San Antonio and South Texas. The two premier initiatives Silver & Black Give Back supports are:

1. Team Up Challenge, a service based learning program
2. Youth sports programs, such as the Spurs Youth Basketball League

Silver & Black Give Back relies on contributions from the public to help the Spurs, Rampage, Stars and Austin Spurs engage the youth of South Texas.

Throughout this season the Team Up Challenge - a new initiative across 26 school districts - recognizes and rewards students who improve our community through activities that are tied to classroom curriculum. These innovative projects are developed by students to address needs in their own neighborhoods – and the Spurs, Rampage and Stars get to help.

Classes, clubs, and teams participating in the Team Up Challenge are giving back to our community through projects supporting:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health & Wellness
  • Arts & Culture
  • Uniformed Services
  • In the 2010-11 season, 20 semi-finalists receive $2500 in seed funding and five of those ‘teams’ will each win $20,000 in the Spring of 2011. All teams who apply and are working on projects are eligible to receive incentives throughout the year, including tickets, player appearances, and more.

In 1989 Coach Popovich established the Spurs Drug-Free League. This initial undertaking transformed over the years from the Drug-Free League, Midnight Basketball League, to what it is known today, the Spurs Youth Basketball League. Approximately 250,000 players have participated in the league in the last 20 years. As we head into the 21st year, over 20,000 youth now participate in the SYBL annually.

The SYBL presented by Pizza Hut and Valero, also receives significant funding from Silver & Black Give Back (formerly Spurs Foundation). Silver & Black Give Back underwrites the cost of player and coach jerseys, training and background checks for coaches, and marketing material for the league such as banners of the pledge to hang in all SYBL gyms.
