In its 24th year, the Spurs Youth Basketball League (SYBL), presented by Pizza Hut and Valero, offers young people the opportunity to play basketball and improve their athletic skills while learning teamwork, cooperation and discipline in a positive and safe environment. The League targets youth, ages 5-16, primarily from lower income neighborhoods. The Spurs Youth Basketball League is funded by Silver & Black Give Back with financial support from Pizza Hut and Valero. Approximately 275,000 players have participated in the League in the last 23 years.
The Spurs Youth Basketball League (formerly the Spurs Drug-Free League) was founded in 1991 by Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich, and Kids Sports Network (KSN) founder, Frank Martin, as a way of promoting recreational youth basketball in economically disadvantaged areas of San Antonio. Approximately 1,100 youth participated in the inaugural season, and over the years, the number increased to a high of 22,000 annual participants in South Texas. In 1992, the League was awarded the 705th Daily Point of Light presented by President George H. W. Bush. In 1993, the League was selected for a Best of Texas award by the Corporate Fund for Children for innovative youth programming in Texas. That same year, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded the League a grant to expand the concept to additional NBA cities.
The Spurs Youth Basketball League pledge summarizes the values that the league endorses and is a message that all participants, including coaches and players, must commit to upon registering for the league. Before each game, all coaches and players recite the pledge on-court as a reminder of their commitment toward a common goal.
The Spurs Youth Basketball League goals are to provide youth basketball players with:
Trained and responsible coaches
Safe, fun environments
