Robert Horry Honors Martin Luther King Jr. And Reading Contest Winner

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an eager reader at a young age and, in his honor, Spurs forward Robert Horry helped to spread the excitement of reading to the students in Ms. Rinard’s 3rd grade class at Highland Hills Elementary in the San Antonio ISD. Horry made a special visit to Highland Hills because Gracie Lynn Cervantez is the grand prize winner of the Spurs/Whataburger “What’cha Reading” contest.

While there, Horry read “Martin’s Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport to the class and discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Through the 10th annual Spurs/Whataburger ”What’cha Reading” program, 25,000 Bexar county elementary students received incentive certificates for their successes in reading. Every student who earned a “What’cha Reading” certificate received a coupon good for a Justaburger Kids Meal from Whataburger.

The NBA’s Read to Achieve program is a year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children. It is especially important for San Antonio to embrace literacy due to the recent findings from the “America’s Most Literate Cities” study which ranked San Antonio 75th out of 79 cities across the country.
