As a child, Spurs guard
Devin Brown spent his spare time playing in the Drug-Free Youth Basketball League at Melendrez Community Center, and, on Wednesday night, Brown relived his childhood memories as he joined over 300 youth for the Spurs/Pizza Hut Drug-Free Youth Basketball League Clinic, presented by Diamond Shamrock. The young players, ages 7-16, were encouraged to ‘Say No’ to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, as well as learn some new moves during the basketball skills clinic.
Specially selected league members tipped off the evening with the Drug-Free League pledge, after which, Brown, the Drug-Free League’s Honorary Commissioner, began a motivational talk about how staying in school, saying no to drugs, alcohol and tobacco helped him on his personal journey to success. After the talk, Brown and Coach Gregg Popovich, the Drug-Free League Co-Founder, hosted a basketball skills clinic and participated in a 2-ball competition with the Drug-Free League players and coaches. At the conclusion of the clinic, the Drug-Free League players had the chance to win a variety of prizes, including Spurs tickets and Pizza Hut pizzas.
Nearly 20,000 youth throughout San Antonio and South Texas participate in the Spurs/Pizza Hut Drug-Free Youth Basketball League, presented by Diamond Shamrock. This non-school league is funded through the Spurs Foundation, supported by several organizations throughout South Texas and all participants are members of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program. The Spurs/Pizza Hut Drug-Free Youth Basketball League strives to offer young people the opportunity to play basketball, improve their athletic skills, as well as learn the importance of teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship and discipline in a drug-free and safe environment.
