- Seattle SuperSonics General Manager Rick Sund announced today that the Sonics have signed Luke Ridnour
to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.
"Weíre very excited about extending Lukeís contract," Sund said. "Itís a good fit for both sides. Luke has proven over the last three seasons that he can lead this team, and weíre happy about keeping him with the Sonics. We feel like the combination of Luke and Earl Watson at the point guard position is a great tandem and one of the best back court tandems in the league."
Last season, Ridnour averaged career highs in all three major statistical categories, with 11.5 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game. He shot 87.7 percent (199-227) from the foul line. Ridnour has appeared in 230 NBA games in three seasons with the Sonics and holds career averages of 9.2 points, 5.2 assists and 2.4 rebounds. He has connected on 87 percent (423-486) of his free throws. Ridnour was the 14th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
"Iím very pleased to be a part of the Sonics organization for years to come," said Ridnour. "My style of play compliments the way we like to play as a team. Iím excited to help lead this team to future success."
"During this process, I conveyed the message to Rick Sund that the ownership group feels Luke is an important element of the Sonicsí future and we should take the appropriate steps to keep him," said Clay Bennett, Chairman of the Professional Basketball Club. "I am very pleased that the effort was successful. I look forward to getting to know Luke and watching him continue to excel as a Sonic."
