Sonics Unveil New Logo and Official Colors
Players, Coaches and fans celebrate new era in team history
SEATTLE (Aug. 25, 2001) -- The Seattle Sonics & Storm today unveiled the new Sonics logo and official colors at the fourth annual 4-On-The-Floor basketball tournament. Thousands of fans gathered with past and present players and coaches to celebrate a new era in the history of the Sonics organization.

Basketball Club of Seattle Chairman Howard Schultz, Sonics Head Coach Nate McMillan, Sonics guard Desmond Mason, "Voice of the Sonics" broadcaster Kevin Calabro, and former Sonics players Jack Sikma, Slick Watts and John Johnson were in attendance at today's festivities.

"The introduction of the new logo and official colors marks an important day in the rich heritage of Sonics basketball," said Schultz, the new majority owner of the franchise. "The new look represents respect for the team's past and bold optimism for its future."

The Sonics new logo and colors resurrect the traditional green and gold originally used by the franchise in its inaugural 1967-68 season. It is a shield crest with a white "S" representing Seattle and the SuperSonics. The white "S" defines the parameters of the shield. The interior parameters of the "S" defines the shape of a basketball illustration colored in gold. The word "Sonics" is arched in green letters with gold highlights above the crest using a classic lexor font.

"The decision to change the Sonics logo and official colors was not done arbitrarily. It is a direct response, rather, to feedback from the fans and an outward display of respect that honors the Sonics championship team," said Schultz. "As stewards of a team that truly belongs to the people of the region, we listen to fans first and foremost. That is why the change was made."

Today's unveiling celebration launches a Sonics "Green & Gold" marketing campaign that gets back to the roots of basketball with the mantra "All Ball." The campaign includes billboards, signs, wallscapes, bus sides, newspaper advertisements, television commercials and the dissemination of team merchandise at events throughout the Puget Sound area.

The new Sonics logo and look will be implemented on all team game uniforms, practice wear and printed materials. The new Sonics uniforms and KeyArena game floor will be unveiled at a later date.

"The coaches and players are excited to be wearing green and gold once again," said Sonics Head Coach Nate McMillan. "These colors and the new logo symbolize the Sonics winning heritage we hope to emulate on and off the court."

The Sonics & Storm organization worked with Seattle design firm Hornall Anderson Design Works to develop the new emblem and official color scheme.
