- The Seattle Sonics announced today that David Locke will be the team’s new radio play-by-play voice. Long-time radio voice Kevin Calabro will continue in his Sonics play-by-play role for the team on TV broadcasts.
“In addition to being the voice of the Storm, David has done a great job with his Sonics pregame and postgame shows,” said Sonics & Storm President and CEO Wally Walker. “His knowledge of and passion for the NBA make him a natural for sharing his insights with our fans.”
Locke has been host of the Sonics’ pregame and postgame shows for the past eight seasons and is currently in his seventh year as radio voice of the Storm.
“I’m excited about taking on a new challenge with the Sonics,” said Locke, who will also serve as program director for the Sonics Radio Network. “Calling the game on radio while my idol and mentor, Kevin Calabro, handles the television broadcast, will be a dream come true.”
In addition to his work with the Sonics and the Storm, Locke has hosted “Locked on Sports” from 7-10 p.m. weeknights on Sports Radio 950 KJR AM for the past seven years.
Prior to coming to Seattle, Locke served as play-by-play announcer for the Utah Starzz (now the San Antonio Silver Stars) of the WNBA and hosted the Utah Jazz pregame, halftime and postgame shows during the NBA season. Locke also served as program director of the Jazz Radio Network.
“We are excited to have David join our Sonics broadcasts on KTTH,” said Entercom Programming Director Tom Clendening. “He delivers a dynamic and compelling broadcast.”
For Sonics games not televised by FSN Northwest, Calabro will continue to handle radio play-by-play duties.
“David deserves this job. He is a tireless worker who loves the NBA,” said Calabro. “I think it’s great he’s getting the chance to call play-by-play in the NBA. Someone gave me that opportunity 19 years ago and I have loved every minute of it.”
