I became a Sonics dancer because ... I love dancing and performing!
My biggest pet peeve is ... people that are hypocritical.
What's the craziest place you've ever visited? Venice, Italy
What's something suprprising people don't know about you? I'm fluent in Dutch
I hate it when guys ... are conceited.
I hate it when girls ... talk behind people's backs.
Who (dead or alive) would you invite for dinner? Usher, so he could show me some nice dance moves.
What's the best part about being a Sonics dancer? It's all really great, but the best part is being able to perform in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Catch Sonics dancer Kelly if you can. An avid runner, Kelly was part of Central Washington University’s cross-country team before transferring. During her year on the team, they made it all the way to nationals and did well there. According to Kelly, running cross-country was, “a really good way to stay in shape,” for her first love, dancing.
Kelly is now in her second year with the Sonics Dance Team, but she might still be more comfortable if she were wearing tap shoes instead of the sneakers that are standard Dance Team attire. “I mostly was a tap dancer for like the first nine years, so that’s all I did,” she explains. In recent years, however, she’s broadened her repertoire to include jazz, ballet, and hip-hop in addition to her work with the Sonics.
That time with the Sonics Dance Team has been a good one for Kelly, who especially enjoys the thrill of performing in front of the raucous KeyArena crowd. As much as she’s enjoyed the games, however, Kelly has to work very hard in preparation for them. Remembering all the routines the Dance Team has to learn throughout the season is the most difficult part of her job, Kelly says. “We don’t go over them every time, so I kinda have to do that on my own.”
After taking fall quarter off to concentrate on dancing, Kelly is back in college at the University of Washington. She’s a year away from finishing up with a degree in social science.
