Calabro Signs Five Year Deal With Supes

The Sonics signed play-by-play announcer Kevin Calabro to a new five-year contract. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Calabro, whose signature calls “Get on up for the downstroke!” and “Get on the magic carpet and ride!” have been long associated with Sonics Basketball, will begin his 17th season behind the Sonics microphone this fall.

“We are very excited to have Kevin continue his great work as ‘Voice of the Sonics,’” said Sonics & Storm President and CEO Wally Walker. “Kevin is one of the most respected broadcasters in professional sports and we’re extremely proud that he’s part of our team.”

Calabro has called more than 1,300 games for the Sonics. In addition, he has been a play-by-play contributor for TNT, TBS and ESPN Radio broadcasts of the NBA. Most recently, Calabro called games during the First Round of the 2003 NBA Playoffs for NBA-TV.

“I’m thrilled to continue what has been a great relationship with the Sonics,” said Calabro. “The direction of this franchise is excellent and I’m proud to call the Sonics organization my home.”

In the summer of 2000, Calabro was selected by The Westwood One Radio Network to be the voice of the United States Men’s 2000 Olympic Basketball Team. He did play-by-play for all eight men’s basketball games in Sydney, Australia.

In 1997, and again in 2000, The National Sportswriters and National Sportscasters Association named Calabro “Sportscasters of the Year” for the state of Washington. In 1998, Sports Illustrated named Calabro “Fastest Talker in the NBA.”
