Chris Webber to attend Detroit Public School Rally
Webber and his family to distribute books to over 1,200 students through The Chris Webber Foundation’s “Wee Readers” Program at Belle Isle this Saturday.
Philadelphia 76ers player, 5-time NBA All Star and Detroit Native Chris Webber will be at the Annual Back-to-School/After-School/Peacemakers Rally this Saturday, August 26, 2006 at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park (near the Casino). The event takes place from 10 AM - 2 PM EST. Webber will be distributing books from The Chris Webber Foundation’s “Wee Readers” program to the over 1,200 Detroit Public School students expected to attend. He is also scheduled to address the students at 11 AM EST.
“By encouraging youth to read, we are encouraging them to take their minds to other places” Webber stated. “Stories that can free them from their current environment and explore new places and the possibilities in this world. Reading isn’t just something you do for school, but for life.”
The Back-to School Rally is presented by Mayor’s Time, Detroit Public Schools, the City of Detroit, Detroit Fire Fighters Association and Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention (more info at www.mayorstime.com). Over 7,000 parents and students are expected to attend. The Chris Webber Foundation’s booth will be located in the Detroit Public Schools curriculum tent. The Foundation and Webber Family plan on giving each child in attendance a book specific to their reading level or grade to initiate or augment their home library. Studies show that the only behavioral measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number and access to books in the home (First Book, 2006). A random number of books will also be autographed by Webber. Toys, incentives and other basic need items will also be distributed to families.
Webber created “The Chris Webber Foundation,” a public nonprofit corporation, in 1993 in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. The Foundation's mission is to provide positive educational and recreational opportunities to youth, particularly those who are disadvantaged. Central to that mission are four educational objectives: 1) to encourage and motivate children to read, 2) to help children develop the foundational skills they need to become good readers 3) to distribute books to children and encourage them to start home libraries and 4) to provide reading instruction for parents in family literacy programs.
The “Wee Readers” Program and book distribution would not be possible without the support and grants from The James Patterson Foundation, Macy’s/Marshall Fields and Dollar General. This event continues Chris Webber’s ongoing commitment to compete and succeed in the realms of sport, philanthropy and business.
