76ers Hire Mike Woodson as Assistant Coach

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sept. 10, 2001 - The Philadelphia 76ers have named Mike Woodson assistant coach, Sixers General Manager Billy King made the announcement.

Woodson joins the Sixers after serving the last two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching staff. He also served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks from 1996 to 1999. A former player, Woodson spent 11 seasons in the NBA, including part of the 1981-82 season with Coach Larry Brown at the New Jersey Nets.

"Mike Woodson's playing experience under Coach Brown in New Jersey and his coaching experience at the professional level will complement our staff well, here in Philadelphia," King said. "We look forward to him joining our team."

Woodson was drafted out of Indiana University by the New York Knicks in the 1980 NBA Draft with the 12th overall pick. He played with seven different NBA teams including New York, New Jersey, Kansas City, Sacramento, the LA Clippers, Houston and Cleveland where he finished his playing career in 1991. Woodson averaged 14.0 points per game and scored 10,981 points in his 11 seasons. He averaged a career best 18.2 points per game in 1982-83 with Kansas City.

Woodson helped Indiana University to the 1979 NIT championship and was voted Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He was named the 1980 Big Ten MVP in his senior season. He was also a co-captain for the gold-medal winning 1979 U.S. Pan American Games team. He graduated from IU with a degree in Physical Education.

Woodson and his wife Terri, have two daughters, Alexis (11) and Mariah (10).
