Despite an outstanding performance from Andre Iguodala and the return of Thaddeus Young, the Sixers were unable to hang on as the Boston Celtics slipped past the Philadelphia on Fan Appreciation Night,100-98, at the Wachovia Center on Tuesday night.

Iguodala paced five 76ers in double-figures with 25, to go along with five rebounds and seven assists. Recording 18 points on 8-16 shooting in 28 minutes, Young showed no ill effects of the ankle injury that kept him out the past seven games.

Young is Philadelphia’s third-leading scorer at 15.2 points per game. Philly missed Young’s athleticism not only because he is consistently able to get to the basket, but also because he also excels at the defensive end in the 76ers’ up-tempo attack as an undersized power forward and finisher on the break.

Kevin Garnett missed the game for Boston to rest his strained knee and Ray Allen served a one-game suspension for a flagrant foul committed at the Cavaliers on Sunday.

Paul Pierce, who hit the game winning jumper, led all scorers with 31 points. Pierce made seven 3-pointers to overcome the absence of the two All-Stars.

The Celtics already had the second seed in the East locked up and could face the Sixers in the first round of the playoffs.

Philadelphia will conclude their regular season at Cleveland on Wednesday night, giving them a chance to see how they match up against the conference’s top seeds.

"We don't want to measure ourselves right now, we just want to try to figure out how we’re going to carry ourselves in the playoffs as a team," Andre Miller said. "It is a measuring stick to a point, but you can’t really worry about what those teams are doing. They've accomplished a lot and most likely they’ll be in the conference finals. We’ll see what happens."

The Sixers take on the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena the in the regular season finale Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. on CSN.

Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Tony DiLeo

On tonights game:
Well I really liked our effort tonight. We came out playing hard. I thought through the whole game we played hard. It was disappointing we didn’t execute some of the things down-the-stretch offensively. We had some turnovers and some of the turnovers that we couldn’t recover from, they (Celtics) got some fast breaks on. Paul Pierce was great, he was just great tonight. Overall, I liked the things we did tonight. I’m really disappointed that we lost. The players gave the effort; I think they really wanted to win.

On Thaddeus Young:
He was feeling fine, he was looking good. That was the one real positive out of tonight: getting Thad back. It didn’t look like he missed any beats, he came back in rhythm. I think he did get tired on some of those shots at the end. I’m really happy with the way he played and that was the one big positive coming out of tonight.

On last play of the game (1.3 seconds left):
Well we have a play where we try to get Andre (Iguodala) the ball right around the basket and Paul (Pierce) defended that pretty good. We wanted to try to just get him (Andre Iguodala) the ball right near the basket so he could then just make a move, power up, and get the shot. Paul defended that pretty good, then Andre had to come up to get it, so they took us out of where we wanted to do that. Paul did a good job.

Andre Iguodala

On tonight's game:
We should have won the game. They used a second unit for the majority of the game.

On locking down the Eastern Conference’s sixth seed:
It doesn’t really matter. We just have to be ready to play not matter who we play in the playoffs. Both teams are going to be tough. If we don’t play at a high level we’ll be going home. We have got to be ready, no matter what.

Thaddeus Young

If he was tired at the end of his first game back:
No. I had some good looks and I didn’t make some, that’s about it. I have got to make those shots. I was surprised that I was able to withstand the whole game and get valuable minutes. I’m young, so I guess I can go out there and do those types of things. I feel pretty good overall. One time I knew my shot was short. But, you are going to have times where you can’t jump off the one leg. I have to do everything two footed or flat footed. If you try to go up, you have to get based first and then go up. It’s going to be like that.

If he was satisfied with his first game back:
I played a typical game. We just didn’t get the win. I could have done a little bit better towards the end. That one free-throw could have been game changing.

Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers

On the team's bench:
I thought our bench was fantastic tonight; just everybody. We looked really good. That’s the group that’s going to win you games in the playoffs. To get them ready is important.

On tonight's comeback:
It meant that we won a game. If you show up, you want to win a game.

On balancing the team with different lineups:
It’s very difficult because you want to keep the rhythm and you want to keep the focus. Actually, at this time the rhythm was a lot easier than the focus. It’s really tough and you can see it in some of the stretches…the low focus. We’re a defensive team and we were giving up lay ups and dunks. I thought in the second half we played defense.

Boston Celtics Forward Glen Davis

On the meaning of the games towards the end of the season:

On possibly facing the Sixers in the playoffs:
This will send a message to let them know that we’re playing…to let them know that we’re competing.

Boston Celtics Guard Tony Allen

On the importance of tonight’s game:
It’s a game that we practice for everyday. It’s a game where we practice for in every practice. It’s a game that’s preparing us for the long run. All those guys get paid to play the games and we attack it like a job every game.
