Player Quotes October 7 - Sam Clancy & Aaron McKie
Quotes: Coach Brown | William Avery & Art Long
Forward Sam Clancy
How has it been sitting out of training camp?
"It's not like I just got hurt. I have been hurt all summer, so it has been a frustrating summer. I am getting better and the time is coming. My knee is feeling a lot better, and in a month, I'd be back on the court doing what I want to do."
When are you expected to return to basketball action?
"They said November sometime I should be able to practice. I am jogging now, and my knee feels a lot better. It is getting stronger everyday."
Have you learned anything by sitting on the sidelines and watching?
"This is a whole learning experience to me. I am a rookie in the league and everything is new to me. The game has different rules, and I am learning Coach Brown's system. So everything has been learning for me.
I am not really out there like that. I am injured, so I am not out on the court going through the plays. I have to watch and see things, which I think is better for me. I am like a bystander on the side, seeing what he (Coach Brown) wants to do and not to make the mistakes that other guys might make there."
On the opportunities that young guys have at training camp
First there are a lot of other things I have to do. I have to get healthy. I have to get in their and get up and down. I am bit rusty because I have not played basketball in so long. I am not really worried about the situation. Once I get on the court and get a few months under my belt, then I'll be feeling as good as new.

Would you prefer the preseason be a little shorter?
"No, I'd prefer the season to be a little shorter. I don't think the preseason is all that bad. It gives other guys the opportunity to make the team. You don't want to shorten their chances up. I know how it feels to be on the outside looking in, so you want to give guys all the opportunities in the world to try to make the team."
Have any of these guys caught your eye?
"Yea. It's hard to gauge what someone can really do during preseason because you're practicing twice a day and you're banged up. You just have to come in in great shape, heads and shoulders above the rest."
What kind of shape are you in?
"I feel good."
Was it a setback when Allen, Greg and Monty went down?
"Anytime you've got some of your key components going down, there's always setbacks, but, again, there's opportunities for other guys who are trying to make the team. So you have to be willing and able to capitalize off of that."
How do you feel the new guys are adjusting to Coach Brown's system?
"I'm still adapting, and I've been around for a long time. He's always teaching and there's always things to learn from him, that's the good thing about playing in Coach Brown's system. I think you always have to be prepared for change because he changes things from day-to-day, from week-to-week, which is a good thing. You always keep your opponent off balance."
Would you like to be a permanent starter?
"To be honest, I don't worry about that because I'm still going to play a lot of minutes. Whether I'm starting or coming off the bench, whatever I can do to make this team better, or to help my teammates out, that's what I'm going to do. I'm all about winning. I'm not about statistics, starting, I don't worry about that. I'm a team player."
Was the Sixth Man Award special?
"Yea. I mean, you think about how big the NBA is, how many guys come off the bench, and the competition. It's a pleasure to know that your work is being noticed.
It's definitely an individual goal that I would like to repeat. If I had it my way, I would want to be able to get it every year. But, at the same time I want be an All-Star too one day in my career. I have a lot of individual goals, but the primary thing for me is to be a team player and do whatever my coaching staff asks me to do."
