Jim O’Brien Completes HIs Two-Day Caravan

    Jim O’Brien began his second month as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers with a two-day caravan in the city of Philadelphia on May 24 and 25. O’Brien, who tipped off his tour by throwing out the first pitch at the Phillies game on May 23, a made a series of special visits across the city with members of the team’s front office, his wife Sharon, 76ers Ambassador of Basketball World B. Free, mascot Hip-Hop, and 76ers players joining him at specific sites.

    The caravan began on Monday at 11 a.m. with a reading appearance at Universal Institute Charter School where O’Brien read to a second-grade class with his wife, Sharon. After lunch at the Wachovia Center with sponsors, he conducted an on-line chat with 76ers fans on Sixers.com. The final appearance of the day came at 4 p.m. at the Ford PAL Center, where O’Brien addressed 75 children prior to a basketball clinic. Following his comments, Free, Hip-Hop and 76ers players assisted in the clinic that taught basketball fundamentals.

    On Tuesday, O’Brien met with members of the media at for an informal lunch. He also made a stop at his former high school, Roman Cathloic where he did an interview with WCAU. He rounded out the caravan with a stop at the 11th Street Family Health Center of Drexel University. Sixers Charities donated $25,000 to upgrade the fitness room at the health center, which serves area residents with total healthcare and promotes overall well being. O’Brien, Sixers President and General Manager Billy King, and Executive Advisor Sonny Hill presented health center officials with a check for the full amount following a tour of the facility.
