"Good Guy" Mutombo
St. Louis, July 10, 2001 - Dikembe Mutombo, who helped lead the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals last month, has been selected as the overall "Good Guy" in sports by The Sporting News for his humanitarian work off the court, both in the United States and in his native Africa.
Mutombo is the subject of the cover story in the July 16 issue of The Sporting News, on sale Wednesday, July 11. This is the third year in which The Sporting News has selected 99 "good guys" from the professional sports it covers, with the research and writing done by senior editor Paul Attner.
Mutombo has been shepherding construction of a $14.5 million hospital in Kinshasa, the capital of his native Congo. This will be the first new hospital in this war-torn county in four decades, with Mutombo having contributed more than $3.5 million of his own money, while raising the rest. Groundbreaking is expected to take place in September.
He has also worked with the United Nations in the fight against AIDS in the Congo and South Africa, and has been working with school-related programs in the United States.
"Dikembe Mutombo is a man of intelligence, dignity and persistence who has received out country's highest honor for volunteer service," said John Rawlings, editor of The Sporting News. "He stands tall not only on the court, but as symbol of 'giving back' for all professional athletes who compete in the US."
