Mini-Camp Notes from Day 4
Rookies and Free Agents Continue to Impress Sixers Staff
Sixers free agents and rookies have been going pretty hard these past four days. After seven tough practices at the Sixers practice facility, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the players are ready for the games in begin in Utah.
"It’s great for young players going to summer league because it’s not a NBA game. They get their feet wet. They get the nervousness out of them,” said Sixers Head Coach Maurice Cheeks. “You have six games to go there and play and see what you can and can't do against some young NBA players.”
Cheeks looks forward to seeing Rodney Carney and Bobby Jones in action. Both have been meeting the Sixers staffs’ expectations since the first day of camp.
“Rodney is a terrific athlete. He can shoot the ball and is a better defender than a lot of people think. He can get up and down the floor. Bobby Jones is what we expected in terms for defending. There are a lot of little things probably won't show up in the box score but when he is out on the floor he makes an impact."
Edin Bavcic has also impressed the Sixers staff with his knowledge of the game. Bavcic is expected to make a smooth transition from European basketball to the NBA. Playing with the Sixers in the summer league will help improve his game and prepare him for the season.
"He is a very savvy player. He can shoot the ball. I think he has knowledge of the game. I think he's game is where it is making shots. He is big guy who will learn to rebound better, learn to run the floor better. I think his knowledge of the game surprised and impressed a lot of us. My personal feeling is that he will do okay. Once he gets out to Utah, it will be a little overwhelming for him but once he gets a game under his belt, I think he'll be okay."
Green is Back Where he Belongs
After a tough year of rehabilitating from reconstructive surgery, Sixers guard Willie Green is ready to return to the court.
"He's a very aggressive player. He has a good offensive game. More importantly he loves to play defense. His defense on the ball gives another guy to defend the ball up the floor,” said Sixers Head Coach Maurice Cheeks. “Typically when you have a guy defending on the ball, it carries over down the floor. Defending on the ball is the most important thing and certainly rebounding. When you get a guy defending on the ball like Willie Green, I think it’s an added plus."
Although Green was unhappy about missing most of the 2005-06 season, he saw it was time to reflect, become a lot stronger and wiser. Now that everything is falling into place, new contract and a promising game, Green is ready to play.
Camp Closes
The 76ers officially closed their Summer Mini-Camp on Thursday with just one session. Following the workout, the team departed for Utah for the Rocky Mountain Revue. The 76ers will field a 12-man roster directed by Assistant Coach John Loyer.
