Medical Update - July 16

Sixers.com had a chance to sit down with Jim McNulty, the 76ers Director of Sports Medicine, to get a medical update on Sixers players recovering from off-season surgery and some of those who were hurt during the season.

Derrick Coleman had arthroscopic surgery on June 11 on his left knee by Dr. Russell Warren, team physician for the New York Giants. This injury forced him to miss 15 games in 2001-02. How is DC doing?
DC right now is doing therapy just outside of Detroit, Mich. He is limited in what he can do per Dr. Warren’s instructions. He is doing a lot of pool work and recently was told he could get off crutches. He really was not supposed to put full weight on his knee, so that the knee could heel completely. The doctor is very pleased at the stage where Derrick is. The doctor is letting him do a little more than somebody normally at this stage would be doing.

How about Allen Iverson? He missed the final 14 games of the regular season with a broken left hand and had surgery before the 2001-02 season started on his right elbow?
Allen’s hand, per him, is feeling ok. His elbow is stiff. After taking some time off, now it’s been almost two months, we are ready to get moving. In his case, he needed some more time to recover since the seasons went so long the last two years. Now, we are going to use the next two months before we go to camp to really get him going and take us to the next level.

Aaron McKie underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder by Dr. Gerald Williams on June 18 to repair a small detachment of the glenoid labrum. What is his status?
Aaron is doing well also. The goal always is that he could have full passive motion in his shoulder at about three to four weeks. He achieved that in two weeks. His program has been slightly accelerated, but is also being held back by the doctor because it’s important that he gets motion. From a strengthening aspect, you need to make sure the area where they did the surgery heels down. You can’t rush that. It’s more important that nature takes its course. That’s why he is on a very grated program. He is actually ahead of schedule with the anticipation that come camp, he’ll be ready to go.

Alvin Jones had a shoulder separation in May workouts. Where is he at now?
Alvin is doing rather well with his shoulder separation. The shoulder is feeling good. He’s partaking in full drills right now. The shoulder is still a little weak, which is something we will need to address throughout the summer. We are going to continue muscle specific training to create a little more stability in the shoulder region so that it does not become a reoccurring problem. Unfortunately, in basketball, playing center is a problem when you have a lot of over head reaching and people grabbing you.

Sixers.com: We drafted Sam Clancy in the second round this year, but he is coming off surgery. How is his recovery?
Sam had an unfortunate accident in one his tryouts with another team. Sam dislocated his patella. He had surgery to release the ligaments and the tendons on the outside of his knee to get his knee to maintain proper alignment. Once again in the same vein as DC and Aaron, you have to let the surgical area scar down to the body appropriately. He is under the care of Dr. Steve Lombardo who is the Lakers team doctor. Dr. Lombardo has a protocol that he wants Sam to adhere to, which we are following here in Philadelphia. Likewise, hopefully he will ready for camp.

How about Eric Snow and Dikembe Mutombo? They both had injuries during the season.
Eric is working out in Atlanta. We hooked him up with someone there to address his ankle, thumb and a myriad of woes that he had been suffering. We wanted to make sure those areas of concern are addressed, and he is ready to go full tilt.

Dikembe had a shoulder strain at the end of the year and knee tendinitis. Both are resolving well. He just went back to Atlanta for the next month. He has someone down there to work out with him who specifically has those areas of concern in mind.

What about everyone’s status for training camp in October?
Unfortunately, when we say ready for camp, these guys will be ready to partake in camp, but the question is, where will they be ready basketball wise? Hopefully, that is what they will use camp for. The ultimate goal is to get these guys ready for the season. In terms of camp for DC and Aaron, the anticipation is that they will be able to participate on some level, if not fully.
