PHILADELPHIA 76ERS TO PROMOTE “IT’S EASY BEING GREEN!” DURING GAME ON MARCH 15
Sixers to award lucky fans with free tree seeds
Fans encouraged to wear green along with staff
Philadelphia, Pa. - March 11, 2008 - The Philadelphia 76ers are encouraging fans to do their part to help save the environment by hosting “It’s Easy Being Green!” night at the Wachovia Center when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to get into the spirit and join the Sixers staff in wearing green to the game.
As part of the night, the Sixers will feature energy conservation tips on the center-hung scoreboard as well as distribute energy tips to fans. The team will also award every 76th fan to enter the door with free tree seeds and a bottle of TerraCycle fertilizer and will give them away to additional lucky fans during the game.
“We are encouraging our fans to be energy and environmentally conscious,” said Lara Price, Senior Vice President of Business Operations for the Sixers. “Our fans may want to consider using SEPTA or carpooling to the game. We invite those attending to take part in the fun activities we have planned around the event. As organizations are increasingly moving toward green initiatives, we want to utilize this opportunity to raise awareness and inspire action with our fan base.”
All plastic bottles purchased at concession stands during the game will be donated to TerraCycle, a Trenton-based company that produces natural plant food from worm waste products and directly reuses the plastic bottles for the packaging of its products. TerraCycle will also demonstrate their composting process on the concourse of Wachovia Center during the game.
To tip off the “It’s Easy Being Green!” celebration, team mascot Hip-Hop will plant a garden in the shape of a giant carrot outside of the Broad Street entrance of the Wachovia Center on Friday, March 14 at 12 p.m.
The 76ers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, initiated a green program called “Step Up,” in 2007. The goal of the project is to heighten environmental awareness and take action to make Global Spectrum-operated facilities throughout North America more environmentally friendly. The Wachovia Center, with the help of Aramark, is currently intensifying its recycling program and is planning to embrace additional eco-friendly practices in the near future.
