Sixers Sign Free Agent Forward/Center Alan Henderson
Sixers Also Sign Rookie Free Agent Ivan McFarlin
Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that the team has signed free agent forward/center Alan Henderson to a contract. King also announced that the team has signed rookie free agent forward Ivan McFarlin. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
“Both of these guys will add depth to our front court," said King. "Alan will provide us with additional experience and leadership on our bench, while Ivan earned a spot on this team with his hard work and rebounding this summer.”
Over his 11-year NBA career, Henderson, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward/center, has averaged 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 614 career games (215 starts) for three different teams, Atlanta (1995-2004), Dallas (2004-05) and Cleveland (2005-06). Last season with the Cavaliers, he averaged 2.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.4 minutes in 51 games (three starts), while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 67.3 percent from the foul line.
“I'm really excited about joining the Philadelphia 76ers," said Henderson. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with the coaching staff and the team in order to help the organization achieve our goals.”
For his career, Henderson has appeared in 36 playoff games (four starts) with Atlanta, Dallas and Cleveland. He has career averages of 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 14.2 minutes, while shooting 54.7 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the foul line. Henderson played in two games during the 2006 NBA Playoffs, helping the Cavaliers reach the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Drafted in the first round (16th pick overall) of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Henderson played nine seasons in Atlanta and averaged 9.4 points 5.5 rebounds in 485 games. He was traded by the Hawks along with Jason Terry and a future first-round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Antoine Walker and Tony Delk on Aug. 4, 2004. The Mavericks traded Henderson to Milwaukee along with Calvin Booth on Feb. 24, 2005, in exchange for Keith Van Horn. After being waived by the Bucks the following day, Henderson was signed again by Dallas on March 1, 2005, where he finished the season and appeared in nine post-season games for the Mavericks during the 2005 NBA Playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers signed Henderson as a free agent on Sept. 17, 2005.
During his collegiate career, Henderson averaged 16.0 points and 8.8 rebounds over four seasons (1991-95) in 124 games at Indiana University. He finished his IU career as the only player to rank in the school’s top five in all-time scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and steals. Henderson helped lead the Hoosiers to NCAA tournament appearances in all four years, including a trip to the Final Four in 1992 as a freshman.
A 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward, McFarlin averaged 9.2 points and a league-leading 9.7 rebounds in six games (five starts) on the Sixers 2006 Summer League team that competed in the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 14-21. He led the Sixers in rebounds in five of their six games, and turned in a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds against Seattle on July 20.
Undrafted by an NBA franchise, McFarlin played professionally in France last season. In 34 games for JSF Nanterre, he averaged 16.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.50 steals per game while shooting 59.5 percent from the field.
In four seasons at Oklahoma State University (2001-05), he became the third player in school history to record more than 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, 100 steals and 100 blocked shots. He finished his career at OSU ranked second all-time for career field-goal percentage (58.3 percent), fifth in career double-doubles (21), and 10th in career rebounds (733). Named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in three of his four seasons at OSU, McFarlin helped the Cowboys reach the NCAA tournament all four years, highlighted by their Final Four appearance in 2004.
