76ers Dalembert, Iguodala and Webber Among the Sporting News 2006 Good Guys
Posted on July 6, 2006

Philadelphia, Pa. – July 6, 2006 – For their charitable endeavors off the court, 76ers Samuel Dalembert, Andre Iguodala and Chris Webber were among the professional athletes recognized in the annual Sporting News 2006 Good Guys issue. The Good Guys are athletes who have displayed the greatest positive impact on the community outside sports, and the focus this year was on Hurricane Katrina relief the Sporting News announced.

Webber, The Chris Webber Foundation, and over 230 volunteers collected 88 pallets of items to aid in the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina. The items were transported on three trucks, mostly double-stacked. Students were the primary beneficiaries from the thousands of books, backpacks, school supplies and uniforms collected. The donation drive took place on from Sept. 17-18, 2005, in Detroit.

Dalembert hosted a Haitian Night on April 5, 2006, inviting 100 children from Philadelphia’s Haitian community to attend the Bulls game and a postgame meet-and-greet. The night also recognized Dalembert's $30,000 donation to Feed the Children which earmarked his contribution toward needs in his home country of Haiti. To date, Dalembert, the only active Haitian player in the NBA, has given back over $72,500 to aid his homeland.

Iguodala announced that he would donate $500 per point, rebound and assist recorded in the April 2 game against the Knicks at the Wachovia Center. He responded to the challenge by nearly posting his second-career triple-double with 20 points, a career-high tying 10 assists and eight rebounds, and a check for $19,000. The money was allocated for on-going tornado relief efforts in his hometown of Springfield, Ill., through the Andre Iguodala Disaster Relief Fund (AIDRF). Overall donations for his effort have approached $35,000 which aided approximately 250 displaced children from area schools within the Springfield District 186 community.

Professional sports teams and leagues nominate candidates for the Good Guys award and Sporting News editors select the winners based on their benevolence. Being a good guy has nothing to do with athletic performance and everything to do with charitableness. These are the athletes in the professional sports who open their hearts as well as their wallets to serve the needy and unfortunate. This is the eighth year the Sporting News has selected the top Good Guys. In all, 195 athletes were singled out for mention in the Good Guys section.
