Draft Talent Evaluation From Beginning to End

Scouting the talent for the NBA Draft is a year round process that begins in September. The evaluation consists of scouting reports, interviews, workouts and much more. Here is a look at the evaluation process from September until draft day.

Put Together Scouting List (September)
Identify the players the team wants to evaluate for the upcoming year
  • The team goes through the college schedule and Tony DiLeo, Billy King and the regional scouts decide who will see which players over the course of a season.
  • The Sixers’ video coordinator, Frank Zanin, breaks down a large amount of film on each player and archives the tapes for later use. From those two evaluation processes, the Sixers put together a scouting profile on each player, so when draft day comes around, the staff may have three or four years of reports on each player to reference.

League, NCAA and Postseason NIT Tournaments (March)
These tournaments give NBA scouts a chance to see many players at the same venue. With the NCAA and NIT Tournaments, a player from a smaller school has a chance to impress scouts on the bigger stage.

    NCAA Final Four (April)

Portsmouth Invitational (first weekend in April)
Chicago Pre-Draft Camp (first weekend in June)

These venues give the team an opportunity to watch possible draft candidates play against each other. The competition gets pretty intense because they are starting to realize that the guy they are guarding may just take his spot with a team.

    Individual Workouts
One-on-One Workouts- this gives team staff a chance to see the players skills up close and test them on specific skills that the team still may question about the individual.

Personal Interview-since the players are getting younger, just having a conversation with the individual off the court tells you almost as much as the one-on-one workout.

“You can’t get a feel of a player’s inner-drive and desire from film.” says DiLeo. “That interaction and communication with the staff tells a lot about the maturity of a player, which in most cases is something we look at closely.”

Psychological Test- gives the team a basis of where the player stands mentally.

Background Checks- the team talks with many coaches and other individuals that have worked directly with the individual in an attempt to identify and learn as much as they can about a player before the draft comes around.
