Sixers Headlines - October 30 - November 1, 2004

1. Phila Daily News -- The other A.I. is opening eyes as season approaches
Remember how the 76ers slipped Andre Iguodala into town under a cloud of secrecy for a pre-NBA draft workout in June? The more the Sixers had done their homework, the more they worried that he might be gone before their No. 9 pick. They hoped if their level of interest wasn't public knowledge, they had a chance. They knew the 6-6, 2-year player from Arizona was the one they wanted.

2. Phila Inquirer -- The 76ers' Good Soldier
In one of the surprising developments of the preseason, Jim O'Brien, the 76ers' new coach, last week named Aaron McKie as a starter at shooting guard.

3. Phila Inquirer -- NBA | Payton is likely to face Sixers
WALTHAM, Mass. - Point guard Gary Payton was back at practice for the Boston Celtics yesterday after missing a week with a broken right thumb. He is expected to be in the lineup for their opener against the 76ers on Wednesday.

Take 20 or 30 photographs of Willie Green during a basketball game, then try to find two in which the look on his face is different.

Corliss Williamson stopped for a moment to ponder the question, but couldn't come up with the answer.

6. Phila Inquirer -- On the NBA | Mourning is making presence felt in return
Alonzo Mourning had been on the court for barely 30 seconds when he got the ball in the low post and absorbed a hard foul from 76ers center Marc Jackson.

8. Phila Inquirer -- Sixers Notes | Thomas may miss opener
Kenny Thomas' availability for Wednesday's regular-season opener in Boston is uncertain after the 76ers' starting power forward suffered injuries to both eyes in the team's final preseason game Thursday night.

9. Phila Daily News-- Thomas' eye injury clouds line up picture
AS THE 76ERS look ahead to Wednesday night's NBA season opener in Boston, it is already time to start weighing the strength and depth of their underpinnings. After a virtually injury-free training camp and preseason, there suddenly is at least the chance they could be without a starter for their first game.

10. Delaware County Daily Times -- Sixers: Injuries are now cropping up
PHILADELPHIA -- After making it through almost three weeks of the preseason without injury, the 76ers suddenly find themselves with a lengthy injury report. At the top of the list is Kenny Thomas, who remains out with a left eye abrasion and traumatic iritis of the right eye. He is now listed as doubtful for the season-opener in Boston Wednesday, although that could change.

11. Delaware County Daily Times -- Sixers: Even Iverson is enjoying the practices under O'Brien
PHILADELPHIA -- A few years ago, Allen Iverson made his feelings on practice very clear in one now infamous postseason interview. Three weeks into this preseason, however, his tune has changed. It is probably a great understatement to say that 76ers guard Allen Iverson has never had much of a love for practice in the past. Disdain may be too soft.

15. Trenton Times-- Iverson enjoys Sixers' practice
PHILADELPHIA - Even if it wasn't four letters, this still might have been the dirtiest word in Allen Iverson's vocabulary.

16. Wilmington News Journal -- 76ers new defense is 5 playing as 1
PHILADELPHIA -- The 76ers' defense is an intricate system of arms and legs moving in unison from offensive player to offensive player.

1. Phila Daily News -- O'Brien working to put players in best position to win
If there was any kind of furor over Jim O'Brien's choices for the 76ers Nov. 3 opening-night starting lineup, the rumblings didn't seem to be coming from the players. Tonight, the Sixers will play their preseason finale at New Jersey. They are less than one week away from their season opener at Boston and are fine-tuning things. 7. Wilmington News Journal -- Sixers' Green, Dalembert on bench

Sixers Headlines - October 24-25, 2004

1. Phila Daily News -- King sheds light on Salmons, Dalembert
In the midst of a raging Eagles/compelling World Series/bizarre Penn State weekend, the 76ers could barely expect to create a preseason ripple. But they managed. And not merely by turning back New Jersey, 86-81, for their fifth victory in six games that do not count.

Practice Schedule- Two-a-days begin today. The Sixers will practice every day at 10 a.m. and afternoons at 5 p.m. Some afternoon practices may be canceled at coach Jim O'Brien's discretion.

21.Reading Eagle -- O'Brien may be the answer for Iverson
PHILADELPHIA Jim O'Brien's words must sound even sweeter to Allen Iverson than all those pithy, profane rap lyrics that routinely fill the Philadelphia 76ers' pregame locker room. Excepting last season's aborted tenure of Randy Ayers, Iverson is accustomed to head coaches who suggest that he's self-centered.

22.Delaware County Daily Times -- Jack McCaffery: Snider: Players hold key to the lockout
PHILADELPHIA -- Having locked the dressing room door at the Skate Zone and forgetting for now where he stashed the key, Ed Snider surfaced at the PCOM Center Monday to try out his other toy. He is the chairman of the 76ers, and so he was there on the eve of their training camp, when, by custom, they pronounce as one that all is right, all is well and -- ha-ha -- that all will practice. So he posed for the team picture and shook all the proper hands, nicely able as he has been to show just the amount of support for the team without injecting himself into one meaningful basketball issue.

23.Wilmington News Journal -- 76ers try to forget
PHILADELPHIA -- Allen Iverson has said all of this before, about how the 76ers need him to be a leader, how the fate of the team rests on his shoulders, and how he's more ready and able to assume that responsibility than ever before.

24.Wilmington News Journal -- Snider visits 76ers, but is thinking NHL
PHILADELPHIA -- Nearly three weeks have gone by since the NHL owners locked out the players, with no sign of an end to a work stoppage that threatens to cancel the entire season.

Marc Jackson is a proud NBA player and an even prouder Philadelphian. Which is why his return to Philadelphia as a 76er last season was so painful.

3. Philadelphia Inquirer -- Getting aggressive with 76ers
Jim O'Brien, a long-suffering Philadelphia sports fan dating back to his days as a 12-year-old Olney kid watching the 1964 Phillies cough up a sure National League pennant, has had almost six months to reacquaint himself with the area since the 76ers hired him as their head coach.

4. Delaware County Daily Times -- Jack McCaffery: Time to give Bowa deserved applause
After so many years of Larry Brown making it crystal that there is nothing in Philadelphia that could not be trumped, basketball-wise, by Chapel Hill, N.C., the insulting endures

5. Courier-post -- Will 76ers' changes yield better results?
Let's be clear: Anything short of a playoff appearance by the 76ers this season should be deemed a failure.

6. Wilmington News Journal -- Uncertainty surrounds Sixers entering season
The questions are everywhere, which is natural after a disastrous season that left the 76ers in disarray.

Sixers Headlines - October 1, 2004

1. Phila Daily News --O'Brien confident with his 'Answer'
THE 76ERS ARE about to find out whether Allen Iverson, entering his ninth NBA season and coming off the most injury-affected season of his career, can still hoist a team on his wiry, 160-pound shoulders and carry it.

2. Phila Daily News -- FOR, FIVE, FOE
Five things you might not know about this week's opponent: We need to root for G Ruben Brown for several reasons. One, that he's done so much work for charity that he was named one of the NFL's "Good Guys" in 2001. Two, because he's nice to the media, having been named to the NFL's all-interview team by NFL.com. Three, and most important, he remains an avid fan and season ticketholder of the Sixers.

3. Philadelphia Inquirer -- Sports in Brief
The 76ers will put single-game tickets on sale at noon tomorrow. Tickets can be bought via the NBA ticket-sales hotline at 1-800-462-2849, the Wachovia Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, or online at www.sixers.com and www.ticketmaster.com.
